This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.

Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable

StretchSimilar to its premise, the night is overlong, stretched and exhausting for the viewers no matter how many tactics the makers install to woe the audience, it all nullifies down to zero in the end as there is not a single piece of craft to explore in here; everything is a bang, everything explodes. The mind-numbing action and chase sequences with predictable twists and turns, pretty much gives it away within the first few minutes of the feature. Addition to that, the ridiculous effort to create something funny out of these series of events makes it more disappointing. The writing is patchy and pointless throughout the course of it and neither is gripping enough to hold the audience despite of being merely of around 90 minutes. Joe Carnahan; the screenwriter-director, doesn't even convince the audience for a second look and the primary reason is its lazy pretentious execution skills that focuses on anything but crucial points. Addition to that, the performance too isn't up to the mark which comes as a shock especially coming from Patrick Wilson who is a potential actor. It isn't even shot decently and neither is its camera work something to aspire upon. Stretch is accurately titled that throws off the audience from the first act and never even attempts to seek attention after then.

Life isn't Fair. This Post-Modern, Self-Aware, Irreverent, sometimes Crude and Lewd Black Comedy is Wheelhouse for Writer-Director Joe Carnahan.Life isn't Fair ...for the Movie's Protagonist "Stretch" a Limo-Driver Loser that through some "Fateful" Events has a Chance to "Man-Up" and take Control of His Life that Spins out of Control on a Regular Basis. He barely makes a Living Chauffeuring Hollywood Types and Fat Cats as They make Whoopee with Their "Ill Gotten Gains" and are Cruel Carnivores. He's Broke and Heavily in Debt to the Mob and the "Love of His Life" Leaves Him for a NFL Quarterback who makes Millions. Life isn't Fair. This is a Raucous Ride that brings out Adjectives like...Fun...Wild...Wacky...Those sort of Reactions. It's one of those that is Not for Everyone. But it is a Smart, Rapidly Paced Picture that, if You Don't Mind Foul Language, Unsettling Satirical Set-Pieces about Indulgences like Drug Abuse, Sex, and Manipulative Ugly "Alpha" Types, there is much Enjoyment to be had in this Type of Thing.A Good Cast Rides the Cutting Edge for All its Worth. It goes Over the Top at times but that's the Template, so Enjoy. Patrick Wilson seems Effortless in Bringing to Life a Likable Loser that is Game when the Chips are Down and All seems Lost. The Movie, for some Inexplicable Reason was Released Straight to Video and Ignored and Abandoned by the Suits. Considering the Deluge of Dreck that is in Theaters on a Regular Basis it is really a Shame that this one got the Shaft. Life isn't Fair.

To be fair to this film it actually does open with some promise; it draws us into the protagonists world and does start to help us to be able to identify with him somewhat. However, once the first few minutes are out of the way it just becomes crazier and crazier and more and more surreal. After establishing Stretch (Patrick Wilson) as a down on his luck pathetic figure the film then flits and bangs around all over the place - complete with lame cameos from David Hasselhoff and Ray Liotta. Their cameos may have actually improved the picture if they'd have been funny and/or if they'd have at least had a trace of self-awareness about them. Aside from the dumb cameos, the first half of the film lacks any real focus and takes an awful long time setting up the plot (which in itself was mind-boggling given how slim the material is with this film).I also couldn't shake this feeling that the picture was also trying way too hard at times to be funny; Chris Pine's performance is very good here and he is funny (for about 5 minutes), but his over-the-top antics actually start to become annoying very quickly. Ed Helms (who was excellent in the Hangover franchise) is given the thankless role as being some kind of dead adviser/conscience character for Stretch - again although I can't fault Helms performance his character annoyed the hell out of me and I never felt that he was necessary to the story.Even when the film does get going it's rather generic plotting was never strong enough to hold my interest. With regards to plotting then one could also address the vague and silly sub plot regarding Stretch and the PinkMinx - this felt like a dumb thing to tag on to the story and although the mystery (I'll use this term lightly) to this sub plot is revealed I never really cared for it to be honest because I never felt that I was given a reason to.Although the film clearly tries to be funny I just found it a little too wacked out, ridiculous and rather stupid, but sadly all of this came at the expense of anything remotely funny or interesting. All in all, it's a roundly poor effort.

Joe Carnahan's Stretch opened to zero marketing, no publicity, just quietly snuck onto iTunes and Netflix without any hooplah whatsoever. Madness. For me it's in the top ten of 2014. Carnahan, ever the inventive maestro, channels the feverish action and intensity he brought to his awesome Smokin Aces in this non stop night ride about a hard luck limo driver who's forced to take on a variety of weird, crazy clients in the hopes of one big tip that will help him pay off his sizeable gambling debt, due in 24 hours. So begins a breakneck roller coaster ride through LA's gleaming underworld of clubs, drugs, cops and oddities, and what a fun ride it is. Patrick Wilson, a wicked actor, plays the driver, who's also a struggling actor, a running gag which actually proves to be quite handy. He's excellent, with a snappy rappor, likable underdog quality and manic survival instinct when he gets in the hot zone. Jessica Alba nicely underplays his tomboyish dispatcher. The performance of the film however, is Chris Pine. He plays Roger Karos, the richest client of the night, a clinically insane, scotch guzzling, cocaine devouring S&M fanatic with a destructive wild side that's the highlight of the film. It's a mystery to me why Pine is uncredited, as he's like the second lead, but no matter, his loss. He gives us a crazy eyed, hedonistic prick of a brat that is the ultimate beautiful disaster. James Badge Dale is great as a cop on our heroes tail.Ed Helms turns in a mouthy, almost Jim Carrey esque performance as the ghost of the previous limo driver, a sassy voice of mocking conscience for our hero. Ray Liotta and Norman Reedus are great, showing up briefly as Ray Liotta and Norman Reedus. The movie deals with whether things are predestined, or whether we have a modicum of control on where are lives are heading, never really coming to a marked decision on the matter, but showing us a character who starts off as a maligned putz, who in a single night, takes the steering wheel of his life, makes a few violent jerks and elevates his dreary life into a plane worth living in. If that isn't a big eff you to fate, I don't know what is. Carnahan comes up with another winner with Stretch. I just wish it was better marketed, so more people knew about it upon its release.
