Truly Dreadful Film

a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.

The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.

It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny

This performance was truly the one that showed what Jolie was capable of--true commitment to her character, and an absolute fearlessness that is rarely seen (Sally Kirkland in ANNA comes to mind). Her performance is captivating, as are the other performances in the film (most notably, Mercedes Ruehl, who should have been nominated for an Emmy for her role as Gia's mother). However, I think the film is important for its form as well; the editing is special, and the script tells the story in a truly unique way. This is a biopic of the highest caliber, and showed HBO's dedication to story and to artists in the late 90's. I also like the fact that the film doesn't turn into an anti-AIDS' docudrama; it's there, and it's dealt with on some level, but the story remains the story of Gina. Well worth seeing.

Gia was unbelievably good. It's both haunting and inspirational. And in my opinion, it holds Angelina Jolie's best acting performance.I think the writer and the director stayed honest to everything they knew about Gia. They went all the way and smashed though many taboos including promiscuous sex, homosexuality and drugs. They didn't censor important details in order to play safe. And Jolie was so brave for taking this role. She completely absorbed the character so much so that you feel her baring her soul as you watch. The sheer honesty in the performance was magnificent. Mercedes Ruehl's acting was also impeccable. She didn't overdo anything but she was just as true to the character as Jolie was.Mature, daring, audacious. No sugar-coating, no romantic clichés. This is what a good movie looks like.

There's something a little unfair that a movie about one woman's life is now and always shall be remembered as the launching pad for another woman's career. Though this story is technically about doomed fashion model Gia Carangi, this film is notable only as a showcase for the talent and magnetic sensuality of Angelina Jolie. With a less compelling star in the lead role, Gia the motion picture and Gia and person would have been quickly forgotten. Now, there will always be people watching this thing for as long as people watch anything for entertainment. So, I guess it's fortunate that, while clichéd, this is a decent piece of work.Gia Carangi was a spirited Philadelphia girl who was swept up into the work of high fashion in the late 70s, fell in love with a beautiful make up artist (Elizabeth Mitchell), fell even more in love with drugs, got AIDS and died in the mid 80s. Now, I was alive during that time and don't think I ever saw Gia Carangi or ever heard anyone even reference her, but that may say more about what it was like to live without being inundated by the media every second of every hour of every day. Anyway, we just have to take it on faith that Gia is deserving of a film about her life because there's really nothing here that we haven't seen before in other "rise and fall of a superstar" genre flicks.No, pretty much all this has going for it is young Miss Jolie displaying the charisma that would make her a world wide celebrity, in addition to an awful lot of her exposed flesh. Not that Gia is bad otherwise. Intercutting scenes from her life with interviews from the characters who orbited around her is fairly effective and Elizabeth Mitchell as Gia's lover and Mercedes Ruhl as her mother, who seems very Minnesota-y for a Philadelphia housewife, both give good performances. There's simply nothing all that special, or at least the movie doesn't explain or demonstrate what was all that special, about its subject. We've only got the captivating portrayal of Jolie and it's never clear if the viewer is responding to that or to the actual life and personality of Miss Carangi.Gia is certainly worth seeing, but it's not something you need to rush right out for.
