Sorry, this movie sucks
To all those who have watched it: I hope you enjoyed it as much as I do.
The movie is made so realistic it has a lot of that WoW feeling at the right moments and never tooo over the top. the suspense is done so well and the emotion is felt. Very well put together with the music and all.
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
When bestselling horror novelist Sutter Cane (Jürgen Prochnow) disappears before the completion of his latest book, insurance investigator John Trent (Sam Neill) is called in to try and locate the missing writer. Trent's search leads him to the sleepy town of Hobb's End, the originally-presumed-fictional setting for Cane's last book, home to some really weird characters and potential portal for the 'old ones', who become more powerful with each new convert to Cane's work.I have to admit that the mind-bending 'what is reality?' narrative of In The Mouth Of Madness had me scratching my head at times, but I still enjoyed the overall experience, partly thanks to the excellent central performance from Neill, a good supporting cast that includes John Glover, David Warner and Charlton Heston, and director John Carpenter's lively direction, but largely because the film is just so damn FREAKY.Carpenter doesn't bother explaining all of the weirdness he simply lets it wash over the viewer like a bad dream, the disturbing visuals and unsettling atmosphere slowly worming their way under the viewer's skin. A kid riding a bicycle on a lonely road turns into a creepy old man, the figures in a painting slowly change position, and an old woman keeps her naked husband shackled by his ankle. There are slimy Lovecraftian creatures with thrashing tendrils, axe wielding maniacs, and an ugly cop who beats the hell out of a kid for doing graffiti. None of this makes much sense, and the ending does nothing to make matters clearer. But it sure is freaky!
I saw this movie 3 times with my friends at the old Manors in Newcastle and of course we loved it, this movie just shows how Mr Carpenter never lost his natural aptitude and talent since he threw the classic anthology Body Bags at us a year earlier. I think I came across writing this review by listening to the soundtrack and inspired by the opening theme for the film. Sam Neill is superb and Julie Carmen still has that look in her eye and gives off the scent since the great 80s sequel Fright Night. The scene of the guy on the bike with the long white hair was creepy and wouldn't fancy passing him during the day let alone at night, there are a few memorable moments and maybe stay with you but not hauntingly. This is a creepy atmospheric,dream-like horror story which rolls into the satisfying horror of the mid 90's. And by the way " This is not the ending. You haven't read it yet"
I know how to appreciate an "Old" movie, but i have to say that i was pretty excited about viewing this one, and found me laughing on the creepy parts. That is the only negative thing i have to say about this movie, and was really disappointing. Nevertheless the script is FREAKING AMAZING. The way the movie is directed and its development is really good. Dialogues are impregnated of religious and evolution theories topics. I personally loved the way how all this conversations and subject-matter were developed in the movie's plot... that isn't predictable. It's a good movie to see and pay attention, surely wont burn your brain but if you have a good sense for hidden things, you'll be thinking about them for quite a while. So in summary: great movie! (all thanks to the script and directors ability), failed horror intention and smart people plot.7/10.
In The Mouth Of Madness is a very cerebral and very intense horror film from one of the genre's greats, John Carpenter. Sam Neil is John Trent, a private detective that is on a special job. He is to find its best selling horror author Sutter Cane (played with diabolical brilliance by Jurgen Prochnow) and get the remaining materials needed to release Cane's next book. The film is greatly inspired by the works of HP Lovecraft, but has many twists and turns that take place in the 95 minutes of the film. In The Mouth Of Madness is the third installment in what John Carpenter refers to as his apocalpse trilogy. The three films in question are The Thing, Prince Of Darkness and this. The end of the world theme is the only common thread between the three films. All three films have separate story lines and are all approached differently and are all brilliant in their own right. In The Mouth Of Madness is a very classy and well done horror film that could inspire some deep, existential discussions, but also delivers on madness, terror and suspense. The tone of the film is very dark and the film is creepy, unpredictable and totally intense. The music for the film was done by John Carpenter and Jim Lang. The Carpenter stuff is pretty distinct and is easy for fans(such as myself)to pick up on. The ambiance brings unease and dread(and complements the film well). Sam Neil is absolutely fantastic as the lead. I do think he is good in everything, but my favorite performances of his are in horror. Mr. Neil brings it and delivers a very complex performance from a very complex, cynical character. The support cast is equally impressive and has actors I really respect like David Warner, Bernie Casey and Charlton Heston. Julie Carmen is more than just a pretty face and her performance and chemistry with Sam Neil was excellent as well. Jurgen Prochnow brought intellect, darkness and class to author/villain Cane. In The Mouth Of Madness is a very original and well crafted horror film and in my opinion some of John Carpenter's best film work in the 90's.
