I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
End Game is a gritty conspiracy action thriller from 2006 with Cuba Gooding, Jr. playing secret service agent Alex Thomas. Film starts with the preparation for a meeting which will be attended by the US president. Alex unsuccessfully attempts to protect the President from an assassin's bullet but he gets his hand injured. The assassin is gunned down by Alex and other agents. Unfortunately the President succumbs to the bullet injuries and dies in the hospital. Kate Crawford an investigative journalist played by Angie Harmon who was also present during the incident starts questioning people and whoever she questions ends up dead. What transpires is an elaborate conspiracy that is unravelled in a thrilling way. Alex and Kate dwell deep into it and try to find the true conspirators in the assassination of the president. Did they find it out and if they found, were they exposed? are some of the talking points of the movie. Director Andy Cheng's tight and gripping storytelling and action set pieces were nicely choreographed and conceived in great style by Cinematographer Charles Cohen. Worth watching.
I recommend "End Game" to all JFK buffs, as an example of covert propaganda. The premise is ridiculous and the conclusion outrageous. For the real "End Game", see the Alex Jones documentary. And for the real Secrect Service agent account, see Abraham Bolden's book. This film, and I hesitate to use that designation "film" as it is a padded hour TV show at best, cannot be taken seriously as entertainment. The 90 min. run time is merciful. I would think it was intended as a joke were it not in such bad taste. A suspension of disbelief is required and critical thinking will just spoil the intended effect which I assume is gullible acceptance of a twisted world view.
End Game is a collection of clichés and it's nothing we haven't seen before. It wastes good talent abound here, including Cuba Gooding, James Woods and the lovely Anne Archer. End Game's main problem is the lack of thrills. There is endless talky scenes, with nothing of interest really happening in any of them. I've already stated my feelings on Cuba floundering in this type of crap, but James Woods must have really needed the pay check. Political thrillers i'm very picky on, because politics bore me in general so naturally the movie's gotta be thrilling. The twist at the end was obvious and I predicted it halfway through the movie, where as the action lovers will be bored to tears as there's not many explosions or that. There is one decent chase scene involving Cuba that impressed me quite a bit, unfortunately it was really the only quality thing about this movie.Performances. Cuba Gooding is mediocre here, and he's a world class actor when he wants to be. He slums around acting drunk and just looking miserable half the time. He wasn't terrible, but wasn't any good either. Angie Harmon is OK as the Reporter but nothing spectacular. James Woods cashes in a check and does a decent job of doing it. Anne Archer is OK in her role and adds a bit of class. Burt Reynolds is embarrassing himself plain and simple.Bottom line. There is really nothing of note here to recommend. It's not as bad as Devil's Tomb or Way Of War|heaven forbid| but it's still pretty bad. Not recommended.3/10
Wow, what a sad film. I particularly enjoyed the lack of precision by actors playing Secret Service agents. They seemed like they were acting in a high school play. The same goes for most of the other actors, even Cuba Gooding Jr and Angie Harmon (of whom I am a huge fan, normally). The lack of chemistry between the two was painful and both of them seemed to have read the script moments before shooting. The accuracy of facts when it comes to Secret Service and presidential policies felt embarrassingly off. I can only assume the low budget is the reason for having approximately 3-5 Secret Service agents surrounding the President, despite the fact that he was outside the White House. The lack of people outside of the main cast was very obvious. For instance, during the car chase supposedly set in downtown Washington DC in broad daylight, there are only 3 cars seen, all of which are involved in an plot line accident. This movie was filmed entirely in Spokane, WA (except for aerial shots of DC) so as a native Spokaneite, I got a kick out of seeing a car chase scene outside of the downtown Rite Aid and a hot dog cart outside of Olive Garden (hot dog carts are a rare commodity in Spokane, as is foot traffic). I enjoyed watching this movie solely so I could say hey I know where that's at, or oh wow that's where I got my senior pictures taken, but if I hadn't been able to do that, I would have wanted those 90 minutes back. Also, the blue tint to the movie made it feel dead and empty, rather than chilling and intense, like the director intended. PS. The low- budget phone conversations (where the camera tackily goes back and forth between two callers' mouths) were the highlight of my laugh fest while watching this movie.
