Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

The movie is based on a true history when Italy ruled Libya. Omar Mukhtar, a true symbol of a dedicated leader. who never compromised with the occupiers. He is fighting against super power dictators unequally to save his land, to save his nationality. This movie shows us the cruelty of dictators as well as inspires us to fight against dictators. I personally very much liked Omar Mukhtar for his outstanding personality and the role he played through out the movie. I hate all kind of occupiers. And this movie gave me the lesson to hate occupiers strongly. I also supports small ethnicity and nations to be exists around the world. Long live the leaders like Omar Mukhtar!

Well it is about the last years of Omar mukhtar Libyan freedom fighter and his encounter with one of most ruthless General Garzini who is sent to Libya by Mussolini to capture Omar Mukhtar dead or alive. And then as the movie goes on Garzini uses his cruel ways to capture Omar mukhtar but as Omar mukhtar out smarts him in his every ways but in the end he captures him by creating a wall of steel wires between Egypt and Lybia so cutting supplies of Omar mukhtar from Egypt leaving them desperate so that's how he captures him and then hangs him in the end.So this is a great war movie ever made I mean moustapha Akkad really did something with this movie he beautifully directed it I don't know what is the ultimate reason for it bombing at the box office.

Director and producer Moustapha Akkad who also produced the classic flicks, Halloween 1978 and Halloween II 1981 has created another gem in Lion of the Desert 1981.Starring Anthony Quinn who was also in other classic flicks, Jungle Fever 1991 and Across 110th Street 1972.Also starring Oliver Reed who was also in other classic flicks, Gladiator 2000, Tommy 1975, Z.P.G 1972, The Hunting Party 1971 and The Devils 1971.Also starring Rod Steiger who was also in other classic flicks, Wolf Lake 1980 and End of Days 1999 and another classic war flick, Waterloo 1970.I enjoyed the battle scenes and the desert settings. If you enjoyed this as much as I did then check out other classic war flicks, 'Breaker' Morant 1980, The Brotherhood of War 2004, Glory 1989, Pork Chop Hill 1959, The Red Badge of Courage 1951, All Quiet on the Western Front 1930, Gallipoli 1981, The Lost Battalion 2001, Paths of Glory 1957, Assembly 2007, '71 2014, Men Behind the Sun 4 1995, The Challenge 1970, City of Life and Death 2009 and Westfront 1918 1930.

From the first time I saw this movie I thought it great. It is refreshing to see an historical movie done accurately and yet prove entertaining. I thought it was the finest performance ever given by Anthony Quinn. A couple of years ago I saw an interview with Quinn in which he said that it was the role he was proudest of and he was right about it.It's not really amazing though that the such a great film was a commercial failure in the US certainly. One only has to recall the line about the right of settlers (Italian) "not one minute of right, to the pasture not one cow" to see the parallel drawn to events in a country some 1000 mile or so to the east. Italian justification of their occupation based on a two thousand year old pedigree got to the nub of today's headlines in the middle east.Lybia, the 'Berber Kingdom', has a long history. It has been part of the civilized world and great empires dating back to Carthage and including Greeks, Romans, Moors, etc. For those interested in music they have the chance to see how 'bagpipes' were and are played from where they came. Early on the movie, when the young men return to the village, their dance is accompanied by bagpipes.Omar's last words are brilliant and haunting: "As for me, I will live longer than my hangman". One of the militias in Lebanon, during its civil war, was called the 'Omar Mukhtar brigade'.
