It's no definitive masterpiece but it's damn close.
It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
Funny, strange, confrontational and subversive, this is one of the most interesting experiences you'll have at the cinema this year.
This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
I didn't hate this movie. It's witty, clever, intelligent and there's a sarcastic creativity at work behind the scenes. However...The Onion Movie, in the end, falls victim to sub-par comedic performances. That's the bottom line. A joke is only as good as the person telling the joke...this movie has good jokes and poor delivery thus it comes out stale, rushed, and it's timing is terrible. There are good actors in it...there are funny people in it..but just not enough to get the old funny-box ripping. I blame the director and the casting. Wrong people...wrong direction. A lot of people do love this movie and think it's the greatest thing ever. They say..oh it's for people with MY kind of sense of humor. Well mine is pretty wide....some of my favorite comedies movies and television include: Human Giant, The Dave Chappelle Show, Naked Gun, Airplane, I'm Gonna Get You Sucka, Black Dynamite, Family Guy, and pretty much all of Adult Swim's lineup. If your like me in your comedic tastes then you probably WILL NOT love this movie. Respect the script...no love for the final product.
for all animal lovers please do not watch until the end. i do not know what is funny about frying kittens. all the comedy in this movie was fine, but whoever thought animal cruelty was funny is a sick twisted person. they even had the mother from family ties egging and breading the kittens and then put them in a pot of boiling oil...HOW IS THAT FUNNY? thats all the world needs is encouragement of this behavior!...again, this movie had me up until the end when i saw this horribly "funny" scene. i only saw the last hour of this movie, hopefully there was no more of these terrible details, but if it was not for this one scene (considering there was no more in the rest of the film) i would have given this movie a seven out of ten.
I rate this movie 3/10 because it was not funny, and it was mainly offensive. Most skits were long and just plain not funny. It was like I was watching it..but that was all...at the end of each skit I was like Okay...that's cool.Occasionally I was like haha that was cute...but I wasn't roaring. There were maybe 2 scenes in the movie that really made me laugh... each lasted maybe 10 seconds.. One being the smoking room....However I saw the smoking room in the trailer and it made me laugh then...it just made me smile when I saw it in the movie because it followed the most offensive scene..."rape mystery board game" which is NOT funny in any way.... when we start making jokes about being raped, it's harder for those who have actually been raped to stand up and be taken seriously.Jokes about black people, arabs and other horrible stereotypes only continues the abuse these minorities face.Sorry Onion, this just wasn't funny.
Although I get the point and nature of the comedy and the satire this movie uses, it seemed such a hopeless attempt. I barely laughed, the jokes are unfinished, unstudied and not ironic enough. This movie expects too much from itself, and there are far too many examples of how this type of humor should be used and understood, that "onion movie" just seems to have a lot of growing up to do. It's just some "scary movie" kind of jokes placed in some sort of smart comedy release wannabe. Some friends of mine praised it so much that I probably expected too much also; I'll just have to talk some sense into them and tell them that profound and kind-of-painful humor and irony go much higher than saying that music videos these days are almost porn. The acting was bad too; probably they believed it would add to the satire...
