The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

Hailey and Claire are two teenage best friends who live by a busy beach, but as the years have gone on the club run by Claire's grandparents has seen much better days. The girls have only a short time before Hailey has to move to Australia for her mom's work. Claire lost both her parents when they drowned, so she has a fear of water, which isn't so great for her since she's a resident of Florida where swimming and partying is the big thing. Their big goal is to attract Raymond, a lifeguard whom every girl in town thinks is hot.One day they find a mermaid named Aquamarine in the beach club's swimming pool after a violent storm. They befriend her and try to help her avoid an arranged undersea marriage by showing her to Raymond; meanwhile both girls try to hatch a plan to keep Hailey from moving. The only help they have is from a nutty but kind caretaker working at the beach club, and they have to avoid Cecelia, a snotty popular girl, from discovering what Aquamarine is.This is a movie aimed at teenage girls, so obviously it's way too dramatic to take seriously, along with bad pop soundtrack and not the best acting. The story itself is pretty good, however I liked the book by Alice Hoffman much better and think the movie could do with some improvements. It's not bad, but easily predictable and not very memorable.

I have to admit I liked AQUAMARINE quite a bit. My three year old is obsessed with mermaids, so it seemed like a good movie for her. There's a bit of risqué humor in it and a few mild four letter words, but for the most part it's a funny, unpredictable and fairly intelligent comedy. That it has such a low IMDb score is surprising to me.While the movie is decidedly for older kids, most of the relatively mature subject matter went over my daughter's head. I'm sure some parents were uncomfortable at the notion of a naked girl showing off her newly discovered buttocks (even if they are blocked from view) or Emma Roberts expressing dissatisfaction with her undeveloped breasts, but my feeling is that parents are way too sensitive about the amount of sex and nudity to which their children are exposed. I thought the movie handled these moments realistically and discreetly. The humor has a nice sarcastic bite to it to temper the more sugary moments. There's some good, unforced slapstick, surprisingly witty dialog and enthusiastic performances all around. I also like the fact that the whole movie has a fantastic, dream-like feel to it. It makes it feel like a true modern-day fairy tale. While it is no SPLASH, it's still a fun little movie that I think I could watch again at my daughter's request. Finding a kids' movie that isn't brain dead is rare; then again, you could say that about quite a lot of Hollywood's output, kids' movie or not.

Emma, born 10th February 1991, is unusual as what I have seen of hers are all nice roles. Well, sort of.Blow (2001), her second by IMDb order, way too scary for me. A biography of a drug smuggler, a story that has high energy all through the first half, then his marriage and the birth of a daughter marks the turning point with his world falling to pieces and by the time that she is ten he is in jail for life, rule of 3. This echoes elements of other stories such as Nicole Kidman's Nightmaster (1987), but is way too much about reality for such as smaller scale individuals such as underclass. Good girl Emma in a true to life story that is much too difficult for me to like. I have only seen it the once, the first half was very watchable, it is very available on DVD.Grand Champion (2001), her third, is dedicated to mums. I guess that some of those who have kids that are under the age of 12 might easily like this a lot first time round, want to re-watch it occasionally with their kids, too. I found it difficult first viewing as the language feels to be more geared to the under 12's. Re-watching, it then soon got to be rather okay. Emma comes across well in this, a sweetie who is really, really nice. The action centres around her brother and his pet and his friend and some puzzles that they have to find solutions for. ER in her first singing role.BigLove (2001), her first, by IMDb order, as a ten minute short that I have not been able to find, yet, on DVD. Two kids needing to go to school, just the parents are a problem. This sounds as if it tries to say something modern. As it is a short it might have been filmed after the other two of 2001.Spymate (2004) At August 2009 this is region 1 NTSC and UK prices are usually a bit above My Price, but not always. A goodies v baddies comedy where it is mostly only the baddies who have a humour that might appeal to older kids. Emma as the straight guy in the middle of this. A feature that gets poor reviews as many under 8ish do not write reviews. So, I can sort of like this though I do find it weak.Drake and Josh, she is in one episode, Honor Council (2004), which seems to be at the end of season 2. The only episode of D and J that I have I could not relate to. Could be that it is best for under 12's who are male.Unfabulous (2004+) Getting to know it this feels like highs and lows. Some excellent episodes and some rather weak. It is nothing like what I had expected and some detail in the series is echoed in later features. This feels like Emma's main training ground for acting skills, essential viewing for some fans. Akin to The Amanda Show for Bynes? Aquamarine (2006). I knew that this was really big in girl world, the under 12's, when it came out. The start shows real power, Emma and JoJo on the beach and showing how they relate to it all. Florida, sunny beach, summer holidays, their skin modestly covered. I needed a few viewings in order to properly like this modest story. Do that, I can appreciate that those under 12's who raved on about Aquamarine had sense that I can accept as sense. Most IMDb comments on this are not by those for whom this was made. The kid who took his little sister to see Aquamarine was giving her a remarkable gift as it was one that she loved.Nancy Drew (2007). Nicely nice girl, so pure and sweet. I could like this straight away and the car chase after the explosion had so much in the way of extras for pondering on ways of the nice, stuff that I now get tangled by paradox by. This might be the most accessible Emma Roberts of her earliest work.So there is later stuff. Wild Child (2008) has ER acting at age 16 as a 16 and it is so vastly different to the earlier works, though bad girl Harriet does get the start of a Blow. Could be that ER features might have variety.Other early stuff. At least two small parts as an extra or cameo. 2001 America's Sweethearts and 2002/3 Lizzie McGuire series 2-26, A Gordo Story. America's Sweethearts, a parody title as this has elements of Blow, Emma is in the background of Kiki's egg breakfast scene where love is starting to be real, though with a survivable tidal wave of putridity still to arrive, Blow was less survivable. 2-26, Gordo has been turned down by a cutie because he is so small, but he has the qualities for bouncing back. Then the dance and Emma is looking forlorn, bouncing up and down in the background, way behind Ethan. The dance has a certain tragedy. Still, in Champion she was a sweetie and in Nancy she was nice girl, in the others an in-between-ie. The later: Wild Child as comedy that I consider to be true horror, old world v new world as different modes of creeping death.Several Emma Roberts features include some information about the filming dates. Potentially useful if one is a fan. With this I am trying to arrange the entries in the order of the filming dates.

I was shocked and surprised by the negative reviews I saw on the internet, I mean why the low rating?? I thought this was another excellent mermaid film, and I LOVE mermaids. I have also read the original novel (or novella) by Alice Hoffman too.The film is about two twelve-year-old girls Hailey & Clarie that are in love with a dilapidated beach club near their home town. After a huge storm, they discover Aquamarine, a mermaid in the pool of the club. Aquamarine then falls in love with the cute, young lifeguard Raymond and begs the girls to help her set up a date with him, to prove to her father that love is not a myth in her world. The two girls also try get a wish out of Aqua to prevent Hailey from moving to Australia. I kind of like Aqua & Raymond as a couple, they're cute. At least she didn't turn into bubbles when he saw that she's a mermaid, like in one of my favorite anime series Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch. So overall, I really love this movie.
