The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

Woody Allen starts this film with a lot of magic, delivering one of the most boredom characters he's played to date. I mean, it's not like I have seen many of his movies, but out of those which I've seen, Sid Waterman is surely the one. Considering that this film's beginning seemed a little uninteresting, I had my doubts whether it would get any good or not. Fortunately, it DID. Scarlett Johansson plays a brave woman who wants to investigate the case of a murderer, so she finds out a way to precisely do that: dating the main suspect. However, after she falls in love with him, it gets hard to make her notice the danger lies beneath her nose. Please notice that I'm not judging her; Jackman's character is a extreme elegant man who would NEVER be able to rise my bad expectations on him. He's just too calm to be a lunatic (please don't notice that I would also be thrown in the river, just like her). The great message of "Scoop" is that old cliché of "don't judge a book by its cover", which reminds me of "Aladdin" series, reason why I don't give a better rating than 7, even thought I admit that I had a really good time watching it. Thumbs up for Allen!

Viewed at Puskin Theater, Budapest, December 7, 2006 ~~ Let's remember Pearls Harbor as we did the Alamo ...Just came from seeing the latest Woody Allen-Scarlett Jo collaboration, "SCOOP". and, -- Well, Woody musta scooped this one up from the bottom of the barrel. Light fare, to say the least --lighter than air on a Sunday afternoon on the Battleship Arizona ... Scarlet --well, yeah --she's easy to look at, but she better look beyond Allen if she wants to get serious about her career. Jack Hughsome --or wuzzit Hugh Jackoff -- Good looking Aussie chap, but little or no screen charisma -- Woody obviously threw this plot together just so he could spend more time following Johansson's lovely little backside around the set for a few more weeks. Didn't find it very funny, and --except for one scene with Scarlett in a skin-tight one-fpiece bathing suit climbing out of a swimming pool -- pretty boring -- but, okay, she's easy on the eyes. The film was so flimsy it was like Chinese takeout in the Jewish neighborhood -- fills you up for five minutes, then you're hungry again -- I actually felt so unsatisfied that I wanted to see a real movie right afterward, but it was too late --as the Pushkin Theater was letting out for the night. Allen was obviously shooting for a Double Double by shooting another one with Scarlett in London but this was truly a sloppy second --- maybe try Nottingham next, with Scarlett as Robin Hood's love interest. ...

Plot: An American journalism student in London scoops a big story, and begins an affair with an aristocrat as the incident unfurls. This is easily Woody Allen's worst film. The story is beyond contrived, full of plot holes, and is very jumbled. Every actor is wasted whether it's Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, or Ian McShane are all given nothing roles with bland and uninteresting characters that don't showcase the range that each actor has. Woody Allen himself is not funny in the least bit, I'll never understand why people think that he's a good actor but that's just me. As a mystery, it is not remotely interesting unlike Manhattan Murder Mystery which did have an interesting murder mystery plot that you could follow. This film is lazy, uninspired garbage that you should stay away from at all costs. Go watch Allen's two other mystery films Crimes and Misdemeanors and the one mentioned above, they are easily his 2 best films that put an emphasis on this genre and blends comedy and drama very well. Go rent those instead, you will not regret it.

It has the funny Woody Allen schtick as the master plays a two bit magician who finds himself thrust into a murder mystery. Scarlet Johanssen plays a ditzy young journalism student who is looking for a story. Her hackney junk is going nowhere when a famous reporter, who has died, escape the boat to the underworld, and informs her that a well known, rich man, played by Hugh Jackman, is a notorious serial killer, the Tarot killer. He is so charming that she falls for him and sleeps with him. Meanwhile, Woody, who initially wants nothing to do with this case, becomes protective of the pretty young woman and continues the pursuit when she is no longer interested. This is not Allen's best work. There is no suspense to speak of and it is more of a format for one liners. Johanssen is stiff and not very believable as a character. The conclusion is not very interesting. I did like the death ship with all the people heading for the underworld. It reminded me of a much funnier movie, Love and Death, where Death become corporeal and visits Allen in prison.
