One of my all time favorites.
best movie i've ever seen.
As Good As It Gets
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
Released in 2007, "30,000 Leagues Under the Sea" features an eccentric billionaire madman, Captain Nemo, who's obsessed with the underwater world and threatens to destroy the surface with only his underwater utopia remaining. His ship, The Nautilus, is a mobile submarine city and includes civilians. It's up to a Naval rescue crew, led by Natalie Stone and Lorenzo Lamas, to stop him. This is a The Asylum flick, a company known for its low budget knock-offs of major productions. I've only seen a couple of their films and actually liked 2009's "The Land that Time Forgot" by C. Thomas Howell. That plus the fact that I'm a fan of Jules Verne, Captain Nemo and Mysterious Island gave me hope. The movie attempts a James Bond/Jules Verne hybrid in that it has the same plot as 1977's "The Spy Who Loved Me." Captain Nemo, played by Sean Lawlor, even looks like Charles Gray's Blofeld from 1971's "Diamonds Are Forever." Unfortunately, it fails on many levels. Lamas and Lawlor are effectively charismatic in their roles, but most of the rest of the cast are okay at best and sometimes downright bad. The CGI is cartoony, but serviceable for a low budget flick. I can forgive practically any production weakness if the story is captivating, but this is where the movie fails most. The set-up of the first half hour is relatively dull, but things perk up when Nemo appears. Unfortunately, the movie doesn't capitalize on this and it spirals into a boring darkened vessel adventure, like a bad episode of Deep Space Nine. On the female front Kim Little is fetching, but they don't do enough with her. By the last 12 minutes I couldn't wait for it to be over. The movie runs 86 minutes.GRADE: D+
Dear, oh dear, oh dear, what a mess. I have seen many bad things from Syfy but this is one of the worst. If you are looking for an adaptation of the wonderful story, don't look here, adaptation wise it is quite abominable. Not only that, it is a terrible movie on its own terms as well. The story is pretty much a non-existent and very sluggishly paced, while the dialogue is atrocious. The production values and effects look cheap too, and the direction is poor at best, abysmal at worst. The acting doesn't fare much better, Sean Lawlor does try his best but his character is very poorly written and developed and his dialogue is some of the worst of the film. Everybody else seems to not be trying. Overall, very underwhelming and a big mess. 1/10 Bethany Cox
Where to begin...where to begin. This movie is just plain bad...all bad. Every underwater scene looks unrealistic, the effects are terrible. I guess they really loved that low budget "light shining through a fish tank " trick since they used it in every scene possible. To bad there is no light as such at that depth. With the money they obviously saved in the F/X department you would have thought that they could have hired some decent actors. This movie was doomed the instant they put Lamas' name on it. The acting is stale, forced and very poorly scripted. Lorenzo Lamas' performance is pretty much like all his others...horrible. As for the rest of the crew they knew nothing of actual military procedures, terminology, proper dress code, etc..and I've seen better acting from an elementary school play (much, MUCH better in fact...and the sets looked better!) Furthermore, it seems that everything that could be wrong with this movie...was. First, the Scotia "nuclear" sub with a bridge the size of a walk in closet?...wrong. It also had the steering and navigation controls of a 60's diesel submarine. Most of the "navy" crew walked around in ARMY rank.(There are no full bird colonels in the navy) Also, the navy lieutenants wear 2 bars (exactly like army captain's bars) as their rank. And for some reason "captain" Nemo wore a mix of US Army Major General rank, what appears to be an air force aviators device and a mix of army and air force commendations...and as the sole leader of this underwater waste of time who would give him commendations? And, one would think if they had the "advanced technology" available, like the pointless "bubble-hammock", that they could have at least tried to make ANYTHING else look high tech. look at the scene where Lamas and crew are first aboard the nautilus...the bulk heads are made of plywood and they're CROOKED! Like any sub would be built this badly? Puh-lease.Whatever you do ,don't rent this action-less, mindless, thoughtless and useless cinematic piece of bargain bin leftovers. You'd have a much better time watching paint dry. We can only hope that somewhere out there is a movie company willing to do a remake such as this the CORRECT way with all the attention and budget requirement's it deserves...and keep the "20,000" in the title. There's nothing impressive about changing one digit to further indicate how far you've sunk.
I watched this movie thinking along the same lines as past remakes of the Jules Verne classic. I was disappointed. Sure it was a low budget movie, but that should not effect the acting in the movie. People were appearing and disappearing, rank on uniforms changed nearly every scene. The CGI was good for the money. I had no idea where the story was going most of the time. And at some points of the movie I could not hear the actors talking due to poor sound editing. The direction of the movie was lost in an attempt to win viewers with the special effects. People will only believe what is on the screen if the actors are able to draw in the viewers. Very ordinary movie. One for those garbage.
