A different way of telling a story
Dull, tedious story of a neurotic, marriage-fixated, anxiety-ridden alcoholic who somehow gets a great guy interested in her. I guess the moral of the story is "Life is so unfair"? Even worse than the shallow plot, trite dialog and phone-in acting is the grating "music" - I actually started turning down the volume whenever it was playing. It makes elevator music sound like Mozart! Not only was there little chemistry between the two leads, there was even less between the two so-called best friends. Don't casting agents check for that during try-outs? Only for die-hard fans of Posey, who does the best she can with the boring script. All others, stay away - there are so many better rom-coms: The American President, Love Actually, Lars and the Real Girl, You've Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle... almost anything is better than this one.
to say i enjoyed broken English would be an understatement. this movie struck home with me like few others. a bit slow for your average audience, i found it was wonderfully acted, awkward, painful, poignant, sad, realistic, and thankfully not your typical Hollywood ending! parker posey is fantastic as a sometimes neurotic, pensive, emotional and desperate woman who feels as though she'll be alone forever. my favorite scenes are the bathtub, the restaurant/desert/bathroom scene and the one where she's finally let it go and decided to have fun despite it all when her and her girlfriend are in Paris. one of my top favorite movies!
Women nowadays don't feel the need to connect with men on a marital plain. And that is pretty much how Nora Wilder (Parker Posey, FAY GRIM) feels her life turning out.Bad date after bad date, Nora leaps headlong upon every man she meets or is set up with (including one horrible blind date arranged by her mother, played by the estimable Gena Rowlands). From meeting movie stars to momma's boys, Nora is sure that she'll spend the rest of her life withering away, loveless and alone. Even her job at an upscale hotel seems headed toward nowheresville. But then she happens upon Julien (Melvil Poupaud), a visiting Frenchman with no reservations about relationships. Their dating rapidly escalates but each holds back their love for fear of losing themselves to the opposite sex.Funny moments occur as Julien's poor English enunciation turns mundane subjects into firecracker discussions. Nora's stress of dating someone she might actually grow to care about leads her to alcohol and her medicine cabinet, needing something to salve her anxiety about how much she's beginning to care for Julien. When Julien finally tells Nora that he has to go back to Paris, it is a hammer's blow to Nora's life. Julien begs her to come with him, but Nora has friends, family, and a job to worry about. So Julien leaves and gives her his phone number "just in case..." "Just in case" happens, as Nora flies with a friend to Paris and quickly learns that she's lost Julien's phone number. Unable to locate him ("His name is like John Smith in America"), she decides to simply enjoy herself while on vacation and scurries about Paris. But when it comes time to leave, she can't. She realizes that she's been staying in Paris only to see Julien again. She remains for a while longer but finally, regretfully, decides to return to the U.S. On her trip to the Paris airport, however, she discovers she's riding the train with Julien, and the two reconnect via happenstance and serendipity.Although schmaltzy and awkward in many places, BROKEN English has that quirky feel to it that makes many of its failings watchable. Parker Posey gives a powerful emotional performance as a woman in conflict with the times and her need to connect with someone meaningful. French actor Melvil Poupaud is handsome, a bit gruff, and just as strange as Parker Posey's character, which makes them play off each other exceptionally well. The pacing of the film is exceptionally slow, however, especially the first five minutes in which all we do is watch Parker Posey put on make-up and look in the mirror five-hundred times; something you should be prepared for. The pacing does pick up in places, but it can get tiresome watching the mundane for just as many minutes later on.
I suppose this should be classified as a 'chick flick' because it is about a 30-something woman attempting to find herself in New York, written and directed by a woman. It moves a bit slowly most of the way but I found it interesting. An interesting character study.Parker Posey, who often plays goofy characters, is the serious character here, Nora Wilder. She works in a small Manhattan hotel, apparently enjoying her job, but seems a bit bored by it all. And, she doesn't have a guy in her life. We know that she wants one, but she usually ends up getting involved quickly with the wrong types, and she ends up sadder than she was before. The script illustrates one of these. She meets an actor in town, staying at the hotel, and has a quick fling with him. He seems sincere enough, and she begins to tell friends that she and he are an item. About that time they see him being interviewed on TV, talking about his great girl he is in town to see. Not Nora, but some actress. The main of the story occurs when a French man shows up, asks her out, but she has been burnt too many times and is very reluctant. Posey does a good job as Nora Wilder in this movie.Spoilers: After a short, good time with the French man he has to leave to go back to Paris. Nora is hurt, but he asks her to go with him. She can't she has a job after all, and duties, she can't just leave! But he gives her is contact information in case she ever gets to Paris. Soon she decides to go, and contact him, right after she got fed up with her job and her boss and quit. But once she got to Paris she discovered she had lost his contact information. Staying in Paris a while she had a good time, met some interesting people, then was headed for the airport. She meets him on the train, they get off, the movie ends with him saying "You know you'll miss your flight." She says "I know."
