everything you have heard about this movie is true.
A Masterpiece!
Ok... Let's be honest. It cannot be the best movie but is quite enjoyable. The movie has the potential to develop a great plot for future movies
This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.
I don't write many reviews but sometimes a movie just screams for one. This movie is completely awful. Wow. I heard some people say how funny it is so I decided to give it a try. I grew up in the 80's but I never saw this movie back in 1984. I am glad I didn't waste my money. I watched this movie on Amazon Prime Video and the acting is cheesy and terrible. The dialog is painful and the plot makes little sense and is just there to provide a back drop for lame one liners.I expected a little more from Micheal Keaton but I think all actors have one or two movies that they would love to forget. I imagine that Keaton cringes every time this movie is mentioned.Do not waste you time.
I managed to find this one on the Movies TV channel.Set in 1935, it is mostly told as a flashback. First to 1910 when Johnny was a kid selling newspapers on the street, then to the early 1930s as Johnny Kelly became Johnny Dangerously.Michael Keaton is just perfect as Johnny Kelly/Dangerously. As the film opens he is proprietor of a pet store, and a boy comes in and tries to walk out with a puppy under his jacket. Caught, Johnny sits him down and talks to him about what it means to take the criminal path through life. In early 1900s New York Johnny was a good and honest boy, but his Irish immigrant mom had a series of maladies. At one point, desperately needing money for a procedure, he gives in to a crime boss and earns $50 by using a folded newspaper to sneak a handgun into a gambling room, for a robbery. As Johnny does well, and eventually takes over for the retiring mob boss, the situation gets complicated when Johnny's younger brother, who he put through college and law school, decides to work for the D.A.'s office, intent to prosecute criminals, having no idea that his own brother is Johnny Dangerously. There is lots of goofy stuff, including nearby explosions that don't actually harm anyone, but they appear with scorched and tattered clothing, much like Roadrunner cartoons. Joe Piscopo is good as Danny Vermin, Johnny's rival. Lovely 30-something Marilu Henner lounge singer and is Johnny's love interest, Lil. Maureen Stapleton is his mother, Ma Kelly. And Griffin Dunne is his younger brother, Tommy Kelly. It was also fun to see former all-pro Chicago Bears player Dick Butkus as Arthur, one of the crime members.Just a silly by fun movie, not to be taken seriously.
This prosaic piece of satiric trash spoofing 30s gangster film doesn't have enough humor in it to sustain a five minute TV skit. The actors are either over the top (Joe Piscopo, Dom Delouise) or flat and lifeless (Michael Keaton, Maureen Stapleton) as they waste their time and display none in this force fed bore.Johnny's (Michael Keaton) hypochondriac mom needs an operation on a regular basis so he throws in with Jocko Dundee on a caper to earn the money. He excels and earns a reputation as a man to be feared while Johnny's greatest is that his mother will find out. Dundee's rival Danny Vermin (Piscopo) sets up Johnny who is then prosecuted by his brother the DA. Will Johnny fry ? Perhaps, but it's director Ammy Heckerling and her writers that need to be executed since there's a complete lack of it in this bites it satire.Heckerling has made a career out of fair (Fast Time at Ridgemont High, Clueless ) to mediocre (European Vacation) to beyond dreadful (Night at the Roxbury) comedies as well as waste time with baby talk ( Look Whose Talking saga) but Johnny Dangerously may be arguably her worst. The satiric intent is strained at best and the jokes themselves sophomoric and poorly timed. Griffin Dunne looks and acts like he won the lead in a contest while the rest of the cast of old pros,( Boyle, Stapleton and Ray Walston ) play it broad and for a paycheck. Piscopo as Vermin has a few funny moments before he begins to chew too loudly but by then Heckerlings hackery has already fractured the films funny bone.
If your a fan of Airplane type movies this is a must see! Set in the 1920's and 30's Johnny Dangerously has not only great actors but great lines. "knock down dat wall, knock down dat wall and knock down dat #@$%#@$ wall." "You shouldn't hang me on a hook johnny" or "Sounds like Johnnys getting laid". Its definitely a spoof of the old James Cagney Movies and references them a lot. There's a great scene when Jhonnys walking down death row and has a priest set up for his escape. Listen closely to the fake priests readings, its pretty funny. Another great scene is when Dom Delauise plays the Pope. Watch his reaction to Johnny after he tips the Pope, a lot said without making a sound.I recommend this movie to all who love to laugh or are old movie buffs.
