Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.

A homeless man and his young companion, who survive by conning people, meet a woman who may need them even more than they need her. Curly Sue although is known as a comedy it's more of a drama to be honest and the messages that it sends like for example family being more important than a simple job is something that we don't see that often in movies this day and age. As for the perfomances? Kelly Lynch is amazing and i loved her perfomance and character, James Belushi is also terrific and little Alisan Porter is adorable as Sue. Overall this is an optimistic, dramatic but also funny movie that is more than just fine. (10/10)

I don't think anyone will argue that John Hughes is a modern day film making legend especially for those of us that grew up in the 80's and 90's. He helmed and created stone cold classics like Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Sixteen Candles, Home Alone, Christmas Vacation...you likely know the drill. It could be said that Curly Sue wasn't his best work. However, that's not to say it isn't also a great movie. It just isn't as blatantly well made. It is predictable and typical but very 80's (despite being released in 1991) and its just fun. It was a movie my wife loved and I realized I had never seen it so we sat down to watch it. It is the definition of a "feel good" film but there isn't much more than that to it which is okay. It doesn't have anything particularly memorable about it, the film is sufficient being complacent in its genre and delivering exactly what anyone should expect. When a movie is like that, it tends to get very low scoring from critics professional and otherwise but most of us who just love films can appreciate a genre movie. Curly Sue is safe. Its mostly clean and sweet and has romance and a few fun scenes and its easy to watch and I really enjoyed it!! I have always enjoyed Jim Belushi and he has had some great films but he never really became a Hollywood superstar. He has great charisma and is such an everyday guy that you can't help but love him. That's why he fits this role so well. He's a con artist who adores this little girl and has lived on the streets for however long but you completely understand why someone would fall in love with the guy. A con-man with a heart of gold. Alisan Porter is our title character and is of course amazing. She is adorable and street smart and you just love her and its not because she's obnoxious or a trouble maker but just truly a kid who has had a rough life and knows her way around a con or two. The chemistry between her and Belushi is near perfect and definitely the heart and soul of the film. This might not have been a break out hit for her but she'll always be great in it. Kelly Lynch gives a decent performance as the rich elite lawyer who gets a soft spot for these two trouble makers. Lynch's character is a means to an end so she doesn't get a ton of great scenes but she fills her role nicely. Its a very typical role but it works and her and Belushi are good together but not amazing. The supporting cast are all decent as well and fill their roles well especially John Getz as the painfully obvious jerk boyfriend to Lynch. You gotta have a pseudo-villain like him in an 80's-ish family comedy. The reason John Hughes is considered such a master by some is because he knew his genre. He was a chef of a certain kind and he knew exactly what ingredients his recipes needed and he didn't try to stray too far from it. Curly Sue is presented on a plate with no surprises and as I've said that's great!! It means its not a brilliant film but it is wonderfully entertaining and I could easily watch it again and again. There were more than one heart string pulling scenes and its just written and directed very well. Usually I have a rule about writer's directing their own work but no one had vision about his own work like John Hughes. I honestly think he stopped directing (this was actually his last directorial film) because his style and vision was distinctly 80's where success was based on monetary value and romance was based on opposites attracting and living happily ever after. He is a fairy tale weaver of a more realistic nature and Curly Sue was delightful and family-friendly for the most part and I always appreciate that. A wonderful addition to our collection!! 8.5/10

This 1991 release was written, directed, and produced by the late John Hughes, who would continue to write and produce for movies after this, but would never direct again. I knew this was one of his films, which was how I discovered it in the first place, so I decided to watch it, but wasn't expecting it to live up to most of his more popular works from the eighties. "Curly Sue" seems to be pretty obscure compared to many other Hughes films, and I noticed a mediocre rating here, so as much as I've been impressed with most of the other efforts I've seen from the filmmaker, it wouldn't have surprised me if I had found this particular one to be consistently boring throughout. It did look like that for a while, but eventually, that changed a bit.Curly Sue is an orphaned young girl who has been taken care of by a homeless man named Bill Dancer since she was an infant. Together, these two survive by going around and scamming people in order to get food. They scam Grey Ellison, a rich lawyer, by making it look like she has just hit Bill with her car in a parking lot. They get a meal from her, but that wasn't as much as they were expecting. However, very shortly after this scam, Curly Sue and Bill meet Grey again, and this time, she accidentally ends up hitting Bill with her car for real! The lawyer then takes the two of them to her luxurious apartment, thinking they are biologically father and daughter, and they get to stay there for the night, even though her snobbish boyfriend, Walker McCormick, does not approve of this. Curly Sue and Bill find their lives changing as Grey lets them stay in her apartment, but are still headed for some complications. This movie is a dramedy, which means it has both humour and serious moments. For the most part, the humour doesn't work so well. Some parts did amuse me, such as the "she was too pretty" segment, but I usually kept a straight face during the film. Some parts around the beginning may have put a puzzled look on my face, such as the part where Bill gets Curly Sue to bash him over the head and she sends him flying through the air! Pretty much everything near the beginning, whether it was supposed to be funny or serious, failed to impress me. However, I eventually started finding much of "Curly Sue" to be fairly gripping, thanks to the drama in the film, though the humour continues to fail, and there may be some tedious segments, especially the movie theatre one. I did not care for the overacting of John Getz as Walker McCormick, but most of the cast performances are at least reasonable. At first, it looked like I was really going to dislike the Grey Ellison character, played by Kelly Lynch, with the scenes showing her on the job, but I found that this character soon changes.John Hughes certainly could have ended his directing career with a better film than this, but if you ask me, this one isn't as bad as its reputation may suggest. Yes, the humour is usually lacklustre, and the filmmaker was well known for the humour in his movies, plus people have also considered "Curly Sue" to be excessively sentimental and clichéd, and I can understand that, but personally, I still found it heartwarming enough to give it an above average rating. If you watch this result of Hughes' final stint as a director, which came eighteen years before his premature death caused by a heart attack, and expect it to be up there with "The Breakfast Club", "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "Planes, Trains & Automobiles", etc., you could very easily be disappointed. This is a different idea than any of those movies, and wasn't done as well, but while I think it's far from great (unlike some people), I guess it is at least slightly underrated.

I strongly disagree with "ctomvelu" regarding Jim Belushi's talent. I happen to like Belushi very much. Admittedly, I was skeptical when he first appeared on the scene, because I was such a HUGE fan of his late brother John. But Jim has an on-screen charm that has gotten him very far -- and he has developed it well over the years.Curly Sue is one of his earlier films -- his weight is a giveaway (ain't that true for most of us?) -- and I like the film. Yes, it is touching and heartwarming, so if you're into car chases, explosions and gratuitous sex, then you might want to pass on this one -- it is a warm film of three lost soles who find each other. Don't get me wrong, I am all for the three aforementioned keys to a successful film, but I also like a nice, solid tale like this one.And although Belushi and Kelly Lynch deliver excellent performances, the real star of this film is Alisan Porter -- who is absolutely adorable.I don't know what happened to her career, but whoever is responsible for dropping the ball (agent? parents? herself?) should be shot. You couldn't ask for a more perfect introduction to fame than this film, and yet nothing of note has been heard from her since.Another sad Hollywood story ...
