After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.
The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
=contains spoilers=I very rarely write reviews but seeing the quite high grading score in IMDb and the reviews (which were mostly positive), made me to analyze my own sanity as I hated this movie. The movie was really a bad one!Few really nonsensical elements ruined it for me: 1) The mute, non-English speaking woman, who was still emotionally attached with the rest of the group. It made very little sense. Even if there were some really unlikely events behind the lack of communication, nobody ever tried to really communicate with her during the movie and she made no effort either. OK I guess we could say "ok" she was just mentally challenged and incapable of drawing stick figures to close the language gap, and leave it to it. 2) Soldiers not giving a crap were the survivors infected or not. 3) At the end, the huge pile of corpses and the hint that the main guy had done this cycle many many times before, was surreal.Good premise, could have been a good movie, but not. Stay away. Watch "the cube" or "the exam" instead, if the like the genre. Peace and out.
I liked this movie and i loved the plot. I found the script was original and the acting was above par. But WOW was the directing horrible!!! I can't imagine the actors were OK with the way it was run. I'm not giving any spoilers away but there were may parts in the movie i had to do a double take. It was kind of like watching a bad slasher movie. Like, don't do that!! and your're an idiot if you go there!! All in all if you like a story that where you are the antagonist finding out whats going on as the movie progresses with a bit of horror then you will like it.
OPEN GRAVE is a low budget US horror film, shot in Hungary with an international cast. Although it threatens to be of the usual psycho-in-the-woods variety, it actually turns out to be something a lot more interesting. It's a well-shot little escapade, a thriller in which most of the thrills are provided by the constant twists in the narrative designed to wrong-foot the viewer at every turn. It's only right at the end that you finally figure out what's going on and it all makes sense. The film starts off quite remarkably, with likable lead Sharlto Copley (DISTRICT 9) waking up in a pit full of dead bodies. He's soon rescued by a small group of people, but it quickly transpires that there's a psycho amid the group. This film goes down the whodunit route for a while before jumping into unforeseen territory which is all for the better. I enjoyed it as it kept me guessing throughout. Copley is very good, as always, and Thomas Kretschmann and Josie Ho give solid support.
I like what this movie was after...but sadly it suffers from terrible writing and bad direction. As a zombie apocalypse its very good but it has some plot points that don't go anywhere and leave you wondering, you end up with more question's than answers, besides that its very well acted. The special effects were great, it had a mysterious atmosphere around it.It one of those movies that had great potential but got lost in the way, the zombie genera needs mire fresh ideas like this but it need a stronger story. This movie i recommend just give it a go in a rainy day.
