A film that is equal parts satirical, meta, stupid, fantastic, terrible, smart, funny, mind numbing and disturbing. 'Freddie Got Fingered' is a film that a lot of people hate for good reason but for me I personally can't relate. The film doesn't care if your disturbed, it just keeps assaulting you with goofy situation after situation and I can't help but laugh over the absurdity of it all. It obvious that Tom Green intentionally wanted to make a film that made fun of the conventions of gross out comedy and I think he succeeded.Tom put anything he desired on screen and it's equal parts mesmerizing and disturbing. The fact that they let him put all these uncomfortable things on screen just elevates the film to the most unique comedy I have seen in the gross out genre. There are various tropes here that I've seen in other comedy films that are made fun of. Everything is so extreme that Tom creates his own style of humor that wouldn't of been possible with more studio interference. While the film does excel at shocking there are a lot of genuinely good scenes throughout the film. While Gordy is unlikable he is very engaging for me and Tom Green really portrayed him well. The twisted take on the 'underdog' character was really refreshing to see, Rip Torn gives a memorable performance throughout, the scenes with Tom Green and Anthony Michael Hall are hilarious and show great chemistry, Gordy's relationship with Betty while extremely bizarre kind of had an earnest and sweet nature which I found heart warming. I could go on but that would be missing the point a little bit. Sure the film is doesn't meet the typical standards of a good movie but for what it's worth there is a craft for creating something so different, extreme and polarizing especially when you compare it to other comedies that were coming out around this time.Somehow understood and misunderstood 'Freddy Got Fingered' is a film that I will continue to unlock it's secrets as the years go by.

Tom Green doesn't want you to think that this movie is smart. Quite the contrary. However, the complete inanity and absurdity in this movie is not enough to counter the abundance of terrible jokes. To its credit, it manages to stay entertaining throughout, despite being somewhat unbearable at points. The meta humor is quickly unveiled in a few (very few) brilliant scenes. But at the end of the day, they're nothing. They mean nothing and have no substance or message to give. Tom Green makes it clear that is the point.

Psychopath Gord Brody (Tom Green) skateboards through a mall in order to catch a bus ride to Los Angeles. With the ticket in hand ready to leave to pursue his dreams of becoming a cartoonist, his parents (Rip Torn and Julie Hagerty) surprise him with a new LeBaron. During the road trip, Gord makes friends with a horse and mutilates a deer after being rejected by a CEO of a major animation studio in Los Angeles. Will Gord find success as a cartoonist? Oh God, does anyone care?A part of me despises and loves this movie. Mainly, I love the "meta" moments that either embarrass the actors (Rip Torn in almost every scene) or observing the unpleasantness a person experiences while watching this movie for the first time. For instance, the child Andy (a simple slapstick device) receives nonstop bodily harm (glass bottle hits his head, a baseball knocks out his teeth, etc.). When I show someone whose never seen this movie experiences those moments with Andy, I laugh (probably out of nervousness) because those scenes don't inspire laughter from that first time viewer, their campy and disgusting in their presentation. Meaning, Tom Green's comedy impresses me because he easily gets under my skin with puerile and gross-out humor. Also, I kind of laugh at the cheese sandwich bit. Most of Tom Green's humor is an acquired taste, that's where I begin to despise this movie. It's amateurish, there's no character development (but that's the point, the film is being satirical . . . let me finish), leaves the film to wallow in unpleasant vignettes and sight gags. The scenes with his wheelchair girlfriend are extremely awkward. The atrocious post-production work (color correction and ADR work) makes me foam at the mouth like a rabid dog. Finally, I can't think of a more comprehensive example of ineptitude for twenty-first century movie comedy than Freddy Got Fingered.

I genuinely believe that if this movie had better dialogue, better acting, and a more grounded script, it could have been one of the most groundbreaking comedies of the decade. While it has a reputation as one of the worst movies ever made, I've seen way worse. At its core, this movie is all about Gordy, an immature man- child who wants to prove to his father that he is a man. This simple and age-old setup is turned upside down and told through the veil of a sadistic anti-comedy. He goes to absurd, even grotesque lengths to prove that he is independent and self-sufficient. Gordy masturbates a horse and an elephant to prove to himself and his father that he has "grasped manhood". As he grabs the horse's penis, he shouts "Look at me, Daddy! I'm a farmer, Daddy" indicating he wants to prove his independence to his father, the farmer symbolizing a hard worker that produces something valuable to society. The fact that he makes the elephant ejaculate all over his father and right after that his father accepts him shows that he has succeeded. If you couldn't tell from that last paragraph, the film is blatantly offensive, and if it offends you or grosses you out, then it has done its job. Its something of a satire on the increasingly gratuitous and stupid R-rated sex comedies and dumb teen comedies of the 90s. Some of the random celebrity cameos are just there to bring the movie some credibility, just like the movies its making fun of, but also seem to be poking fun at them (like Shaq's cameo). The sheer ridiculousness of everything that happens is itself pretty entertaining and funny. Some people find this movie absolutely hilarious, and I'll admit I'm one of those people.Don't get me wrong, this movie is FAR from a masterpiece. The acting is mostly pretty bad, the story drags at points, and all the dialogue sounds like it was written my Tom Green himself. If the movie was more realistic, Gordy would have been fired twice and arrested at least three times. There are a lot of jokes in the movie that Tom Green has admitted are just inside jokes between him and his friends. That's great for you and your friends, but the general movie going audience won't get half your references. In my humble opinion, this movie had a lot of potential, and in some ways Tom Green may be some kind of comedic genius, but the film's sloppy execution holds it back from being anything more than a fun novelty movie for me to troll my unsuspecting friends with on movie night.
