Let's be realistic.
This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.
All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
Don't believe the reviews! This film is a stellar piece of cinema. The score predominantly dictates the emotions characters have during scenes. Some bits may meander but the articulation of this film is beyond measure. Despite the ovassional misstep THIS FILM is a modern day classic. The hero's journey conveyed in a truly distinct way!
Jody Hill's wonderfully dark, mean spirited comedy is quite the departure for Seth Rogen. Gone is the good natured teddy bear we've come to love, replaced by a bipolar, delusional, sorry sack of a man named Ronnie Barnhardt. Ronnie is head of mall security in a dreary suburban plaza, and likes to think he runs it with an iron fist, when in fact he's a buffoon. Rogen willingly dives in, showing us an unstable man child with a skewed outlook on justice. When a hilarious, potty mouthed dick flasher shows his face around the mall parking lot, Ronnie sees it has his chance to crack a case (along with a few heads) and win over the approval of Brandi (Anna Faris), the makeup counter girl. Faris's performance is inspired, slutty lunacy, and she milks the ditzy, cringe inducing airhead bimbo fpr all its worth, with priceless facial expressions and a valley girl whine that would make the 90210 chicks puke. When hotshot Detective Harrison (Ray Liotta) shows up to investigate, Ronnie immediately butts heads with him, in an obnoxious, belligerent way that eventually pushes the cop to the brink. Liotta uses his bristling hostility perfectly in comic form, and he's a treat to watch here, all macho swagger and arrogant sass. The film has a tone of constant irreverence, is wickedly anti PC, and quite the underside of the usual stuff Rogen does, which I love. Anyone with a twisted sense of humour will bawl laughing in this one. There's great cameos here too, including Danny Mcbride, Aziz Ansari, Patton Oswalt Celia Weston. Michael Pena dons an outlandish perm and a goofy lisp to play Ronnie's second in command. Director Hill's brand of prickly, biting humour where you don't know whether to laugh or be freaked out at times isn't for everyone, but I find it a breath of black humored air in the comedy genre, and a welcome deviation.
Observe and Report is the second of two mall security person movies to be released in 2009. This film is definitely not nearly as family- friendly, and is more vulgar to the taste. I sort of thought it was a funny movie, but it had a mean-spirited tone which somehow I was not able to digest. Short in length, the film wastes no time telling you what kind of movie it is and at least the film knows it's a stupid movie. I liked Paul Blart better, but this film does have a certain charm and it was pretty funny at points. Jody Hill's movie is about is about a mall security guard named Ronnie. After a flasher exposed himself at the mall, Ronnie makes it a priority to catch the flasher. Trouble arises when the flasher exposes himself to the girl of his dreams thus bringing in the cops, in particular the shady Detective Harrison. The acting is pretty good, I thought. Seth Rogen does a relatively good job as Ronnie, though he could have been a little nicer. Ray Liotta made a fine detective and is not as corrupt as other cops he has played. I also thought Michael Pena did a solid job as Ronnie's right-hand man who gave this film a surprising twist. Overall, Observe and Report is an okay movie, but don't expect anything special. I'm all down for raucous comedies, but it goes a little overboard when things get mean, blatantly obvious mean. There are many jokes, and a lot of them do manage to be effective. But in the end, Paul Blart was the better movie this year. But I still sort of liked the film. I rate this film 7/10.
Ronnie Barnhardt (Seth Rogen) is a self-deluded mall chief security guard and lives with his alcoholic mother (Celia Weston). He pines for the superficial cosmetic sales clerk Brandi (Anna Faris). There's the new girl Nell (Collette Wolfe) working at the food court. There's also a flasher stalking the mall parking lot. Detective Harrison (Ray Liotta) comes to investigate. Working under Ronnie are the twins, Dennis (Michael Peña), and the kid Charles (Jesse Plemons). Then the mall gets robbed.Coming so close after 'Paul Blart', it got lost in the confusion. Unlike that movie, this is a much darker affair and funnier because of it. It has some ridiculous stupidity and funny idiocy. Writer/director Jody Hill is the same guy that made 'The Foot Fist Way'. It has the same feel, but like that movie, this schtick does get tiring. Ronnie is arrogantly stupid, and petty. It's not really in Seth Rogen's wheelhouse. It's much more Danny McBride's character although I understand why they got the bigger star to lead.
