The Haunting of Molly Hartley

When teenage Molly Hartley moves to a new town, she's haunted by terrifying visions that may have to do with dark secrets from her past. A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

The Haunting of Molly Hartley (2008): Dir: Mickey Liddell / Cast: Haley Bennett, Jake Webber, Chace Crawford, Shanna Collins, Marin Hinkle: Hauntingly stupid horror film about paranoia. It is also among countless films just like it that are released in the hundreds and are all about as bad as this one. It opens with a father killing his daughter before her 18th birthday in a scene that makes no sense. Now Hartley again faces her 18th closing in at a new school but fears that her mother will escape an asylum. Director Mickey Liddell is backed with visual appeal but the screenplay is reprehensible garbage that needs more than a decent director to improve its chances of being anything other than sh*t. Its portrayal of Christians is another morbid attack but that seems to be the only way the industry can relate. Haley Bennett plays Hartley, headaches and all. Perhaps an aspirin or even a swift kick in the ass might serve Molly well but alas, she is destine to be a tortured soul and will bring poor viewers in with her. Others wasting time are Jake Webber, Chace Crawford and Shanna Collins. Perhaps they saw this as an opportunity but whether this leads to better employment will be the things of luck. Although well made visually, this film is pointless and about as frightening as an episode of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. Molly will likely be haunted by this mindless junk for years. Score: 3 / 10

Combine Rosemary's Baby (1968) with Carrie (1976) and you'll get this movie. Basically Molly Hartley is a girl with a traumatic past who moves to a new town after her religious and mentally ill mother is sent away. The problem is far worse than she ever could have imagined though... she's been drafted by Satan's minions... but who exactly are they? This movie was boring as hell, the characters were all robot clones and the plot is unoriginal. I wouldn't really recommend it, it does have a few good points but it just isn't worth it. I was at my friend's house and we both fell asleep watching this thing, it's not a very good movie at all.

Do not watch it if you are thinking to see something like The Exorcist or The Last Exorcism. Although the title involves the word 'haunting' nothing is really scary. on the other hand, the acting of all was pretty well and they looked believable but it's the script that let us down. For so many the opening sequence is rather creepy but so many had questions with that particular part. It has in fact nothing to do with the story of Molly herself and it doesn't explain anything but it do shows that the 'haunting' goes on and on. The word haunting does mean that it should have some creepy or even scary moments sadly it doesn't. It has a lot of jump scenes (even one CGI face) but to be honest it is really one for the teenagers. There's no blood or whatsoever in this flick, it's just one to show at a party with some youngsters, they surely will jump or get goosebumps but for the geeks it has nothing to offer. Just look were our main actress went to, The Hole 3D (2009) another teenager horror. Mickey Liddell did his first effort to direct a horror, on that part it was okay, he new his stuff as a producer of The Collector (2009). It's sad that so many good looking faces and acting facilities are destroyed by a weak script, really, it doesn't develop and goes to nowhere until the final part and still that didn't really worked out well.Gore 0/5 Nudity 0/5 Effects 1/5 Story 2/5 Comedy 0/5

.. it's not that bad. 3,7 average really is not justified. I'm a horror movie fan, but I'm not a big fan of gore. I check here before I watch, so I can pass the ones that mostly rely on graphic shock images. Up until Saw and Hostel I could usually watch pretty much anything, but since these movies I have passed at least 50 % of the new "horror movies" that only seem to try and go crazier with the gore.Because of the latest "horror movies", I can easily understand why a movie like this just doesn't do it anymore. There is basically zero gore and very few scares. The movie doesn't even try to push the envelope any further, but tells an fairly interesting story with a strong religious undertone.Having said all this, the movie is not a complete winner either. It's a small movie, could be an episode of a series. It's not exactly Masters of Horror material (lack of gore and nudity), but the production values are somewhat similar. The movie looks OK, but is not dazzling. The acting is OK, but never much better. The script is OK, but nothing mind boggling. The CGI in one scene is just bad.Probably the biggest problem is that the movie is clearly made for teens, but it does not pack any of the ingredients teens of today really want from an horror movie. I'm not a teen anymore, so I appreciated the story, but it being clearly made for younger audience was a bit of turn off. Soundtrack is a bit of an problem too, you get the occasional upbeat college rock tunes, which don't quite fit in the somewhat serious tone of the whole. There has been talk that this movie is kind of anti-Christian. It could be seen this way if you get easily offended by the subject. For me this was quite interesting storywise, as there are rarely movies of this kind. The religion, Christianity and possible satanism are usually portrayed on a more symbolic level rather than with everyday people. I don't think it tries to feed a certain religious view. It just tells a story.I wouldn't rent this for a big money or go see this in a theater, but if you catch it on TV and have nothing else to do, give it a chance, it's not that bad.
