Purely Joyful Movie!
I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
This movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows
In trying to get at the heart of why this film is merely good, not hilarious, I think that an over-reliance on improvisation is at fault. In a mockumentary, such rough moments can be 'disguised' as byproducts of the faux reality, whereas in a straight film like this they cannot. A good example is provided by John Michael Higgins as Corey Taft, the stolid agent for Marilyn Hack. While he's got a few good scenes, too many of his obnoxious to the core character simply is stuff seen done better before. And he suffers in contrast to Levy's character, Morley Orfkin, agent to Victor Allen Miller. The same goes for Ed Begley Jr.'s tired and routine gay makeup man character, Sandy Lane. Also, some of the same old tired in-jokes and stereotypes about Hollywood abound. If only two or three were used, rather than fifteen or twenty, the film would have been better off, and the balance would have aided the true pathos of the film. In that sense, this film was a bit lesser version of David Mamet's State And Main crossed with Robert Altman's The Player.Yet, despite all that, this film is, in truth, a good adult comedy, and given that they are so rare, its flaws are minor in comparison to its good points. Compare it to the latest black or teen exploitation comedy and you'll agree. For Your Consideration may not, itself, be worthy of consideration for an Academy Award, but it may stand out as a critical film in the continued evolution of one of American film's most original and funny filmic auteurs. La chaim!
*Spoiler/plot- 2006, A small Jewish themed film (the film "Home for Purim," a drama set in the mid-1940s American South) is being made in Hollywood and production problems come alone the way that need to be solved creatively.*Special Stars- Catherine O'hara, Ed Bagley Jr, Eugene Levy, Harry Shearer, Bob Balaban, Michael McKean, Fred Ward, Jane Lynch, Christopher Guest, Rachael Harris, Carrie Aizley, Jennifer Coolidge*Theme- Hollywood film business is a crazy impressionable system.*Trivia/location/goofs- The first of this comedy acting groups ensemble cast's films to follow with many more mainstream feature films. Film is made in Hollywood on studio lots.*Emotion- An enjoyable but rather crazy look at things from Hollywood. Actors to the press are explored in a funny way with a small amount of truth to make these things strike home with the film's audience. Demonstrates the production of a feature film in Hollywood with comedic aspects showing the flawed human system that is movie making.
having not seen any Christopher Guest movie before this one,i was pleasantly surprised.i found it very clever, witty and sly.i also love the fact that it skewers some of the people in the entertainment and talk show industries.i won't name any manes, but it was bang on it it's depictions of many of those people.the humour in this film is earned honestly its no the bottom of the barrel subtle as a sledgehammer type of comedy.it's more comedic observations.any movie that makes fun of the entertainment industry earns points in my book.after having seen this movie,i look forward to seeing the others in the Christopher Guest catalogue.for me,For your Consideration is an 8/10
What in the heck happened here?! How did this movie end up being so incredibly unfunny and unlikable when those involved were the same people that brought us the terrific BEST IN SHOW, WAITING FOR GUFFMAN and A MIGHTY WIND? Now I know that the humor of these other films is pretty subtle (particularly in A MIGHTY WIND), but here in FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION it was so subtle that it simply didn't exist at all--now THAT'S subtle!!! The film, like these other films, is a free-form and somewhat unscripted film about the film industry--in particular some down and out actors who star in the fictitious film "Home for Purim". Amazingly with such a fertile ground as the movie industry, the film came off so poorly. It should have been easy to make fun of the shallowness but instead just came off as sad. The only laughs came from Fred Willard, but even his great quips became very tiresome by the end of the film as the movie just didn't seem to know where to end...or how to be interesting or even funny. His cruel and loud character just seemed out of place in this film. A dreadfully uninteresting film from some incredibly talented folks. Who would have believed this?!?By the way, in previous efforts, I scored WAITING FOR GUFFMAN 8, BEST IN SHOW 9 and A MIGHTY WIND 9. So this just goes to show you that I really was favorably disposed to this film and really wanted to like it. Too bad it was terribly unfunny and dull from start to finish.
