Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
Memorable, crazy movie
Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.
The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
In 1983, the Disney company was at its lowest point--or darn close. The once-great studio appeared to be very stagnant and nearing the end of its run. Little did folks realize that a rebirth was awaiting in the mid-late 1980s--with great cartoons such as "The Great Mouse Detective", "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "The Little Mermaid". So, it is nice to see "Mickey's Christmas Carol"--as the artwork is just lovely and shows that the studio still had it. Because of this, it's a very impressive film--and worth seeing. Now this IS a qualified endorsement--as despite the great animation and the use of classic characters, the subject matter is dull stuff indeed. After all, there must have been about a bazillion different versions of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". In fact, to me it's like a lost opportunity where Disney COULD have achieved greatness with this cartoon but because of the overly familiar subject matter it is just 'nice'. Nice wouldn't save the studio.
This was a very nice and enjoyable Christmas animation, being one of my favorite adaptations of "A Christmas Carol".It has a fantastic animation, with very cute and appealing designs (Though I shouldn't be surprised by that) and many funny and heartwarming moments, capturing perfectly well the good-spirited essence of the original story.The way in which this used Disney characters for the classic story was clever and well made, since everyone was just perfect in their respective roles.While this isn't the best short done by Disney (That would be the marvelous "The Little Matchgirl" animated adaptation from the year 2006) this was an excellent version of this classic story, being perfect to watch during Christmas time.
The return of Walt Disney's most famous cartoon character, Mickey Mouse, to the silver screen after a prolonged 30-year absence was via this wonderful, Oscar-nominated animated short subject a Disneyfication of Charles Dickens' Christmas perennial which, surprisingly enough for being made during a period of low ebb for the studio, succeeds far better than it ought to. Ebeneezer Scrooge is played by Scrooge McDuck (voiced by veteran actor Alan Young) while Mickey Mouse portrays his overworked underpaid employee Bob Cratchit; also making a welcome appearance (and adding to the fun) is Donald Duck as Scrooge's happy-go-lucky nephew, Goofy as the clumsy (what else?) ghost of Jacob Marley, Jiminy Cricket as the Ghost of Christmas Past and Willie the Giant (of the BEANSTALK fame) as the Ghost of Christmas Present. At 26 minutes, the narrative is necessarily overly condensed but the familiar characters (ironically enough) come so vividly to life here that one is, just like Dickens' own Oliver Twist, left asking for more! P.S. Initially, it wasn't my intention to watch this Disney short over the Christmas period in fact, I practically forgot that I actually owned it on DVD as part of the "Walt Disney Treasures" 2-Disc Set of MICKEY MOUSE IN LIVING COLOR VOLUME 2! However, recent enthusiastic comments I've read on an online Forum made me spring for it sooner rather than later...
"Mickey's Christmas Carol" is an okay Christmas tale, but not more than that: okay. I feel that this cartoon doesn't fully have that Christmas magic or spirit we are used to, not to mention that it is too dark for a Christmas tale.I think that the whole sequences with ghosts ruin this short a little: a Goofy ghost, a Willie the Giant's ghost (what's the point of that?) and a Pete's ghost in a cemetery (an extremely dark sequence which children must be aware because it may be too frightening for them).Basically this short focus on Scrooge McDuck, someone so selfish and greedy that he doesn't give any donations for the poor. Despite this, deep down inside Mr. Scrooge isn't that heartless, even if he doesn't show off that. At the end, maybe because of the traumatizing experiences he had with the 3 mentioned ghosts, he ends up feeling the Christmas spirit and gives donations for the poor ones.This cartoons also features other popular Disney starts, such as Minnie Mouse, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Jiminy Cricket and Goofy (although all of the characters have different names here). This was also the last cartoon which Donald Duck was voiced by the legendary Clarence Nash.The story of this cartoon is "so-so", there isn't actually much humor (unlike the usual on Disney classics) and the artwork isn't among the finest from Disney.In my opinion, there are other Christmas animated movies/shorts that I recommend much more than this because they are much better choices: "The Night Before Christmas" (Tom & Jerry), "Pluto's Christmas Tree", "The Polar Express" and the Silly Symphonies "Santa's Workshop" and "The Night Before Christmas", for example.
