I'll tell you why so serious
The first must-see film of the year.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
When Arbie's girlfriend turns out to be a lesbian, he decides not to go to college but to work at the American Chicken Bunker where she always protests. One thing, the American Chicken Bunker was built on an Ancient Indian Burial Ground and on Toxic Waste. This is bloody, gory, full of gratuitous nudity, vomit and bodily fluids (not to mention poop)... this is Troma. And it references other Troma films (Toxic Avenger, Tromeo and Juliet). And it is a musical.I recall Uncle Lloyd promoting this film for years, and I half-thought it would never happen and half-thought if it did that the film would be pieced together so poorly that it would be worthless. I was wrong on both counts. While not a good movie by any stretch of the imagination, that would not be a Troma film if it was. Not since "Terror Firmer" (1999) have we seen a film like this. Welcome back!
I liked it. Let's get this straight. It is cheesy to say the very least but I think that made the film, after all, have you ever seen a serious film about half-zombie-half-chickens? lol The major problem I have with this film is that it tries to offend everyone - although it failed to hit us straight, white, British, it did get very annoying. I hope it doesn't offend you too, because it is a brilliant idea for a film, as I may have mentioned before. The choice of music entertained me. I have never seen a better use for "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" or Grindcore Death Metal. Yes. I am a metal fan... This film is obviously done on a tight budget and it shows throughout, but the directing, editing and camera-work is superb! Even the close-ups of the obviously fake anus didn't look out of place. Comedy films appeal to me, zombie film appeal to me and cheesy, low budget films appeal to me. If these things appeal to you, and you love some gore (constantly throughout!)then this film is deffo for you! XDThis film is so colourful too! Reds and greens everywhere. I gagged at points too!
This movie achieves the perfect Troma formula. The ridiculous premise is delivered quickly, in a self parodic manner that underlines its absurdity in bold capital letters for the viewer. The story develops in a perfect horror movie fashion, with a series of "meanwhile" moments (such as the Jared bathroom scene, or the "mysterious pulsating vein-covered eggs") that occur right under the noses of the unsuspecting characters, especially the terminally ignorant Arby, whose ability to overlook the obvious is exxagerated beyond all credibility in typical over-the-top Troma fashion. These "meanwhile moments" are set against a beautifully crafted story of protest, love, and even intrigue, with a few genuinely shocking plot twists, that keep the viewer distracted just long enough to fill up the next bucket of gore and throw it in his face. The pace develops like a horror movie roller coaster, climbing up that scary first hill and then plummeting into an orgy of chaos and chicken feathers. This is a movie where the low production values are played up with pride, allowing the viewer to see that the cast had just as much (possibly more) fun making the movie as the audience has watching it.Watching "Poultrygeist" you really feel like you're "in on the joke" as if you were part of the production. During the protest chanting scene, you can really feel how many times the crowd must have had to rehearse those lines, as though you were one of them. And the completely over the top caricature style acting somehow manages not to completely drown the story, but even enhance it. This movie takes an insanely ridiculous premise, embellishes it with a classic "boy meets girl, girl becomes a lesbian, boy tries to win girl back by working at a fast food joint" story, sets it against a turbulent background of political strife, ices the cake with gallons of fake blood, and then sets a few truly magnificent musical numbers in as bright shining candles.
Those who are familiar with Troma would not be in the least surprised that lesbians, vegetarians, Muslims, fast-food joints, mega-corporations, Mexicans, Native Americans, Gays, and fat people would all be parodied and dissed.Add zombies, lots of vomit, lots of blood, sex with chicken carcasses, cannibalism, decapitations, and a bathroom completed covered in shite after a visit from Jared. And, yeah, the things they did with the deep fat fryer and meat slicing machine. Ugh! Lets not forget that there are way more breasts in the film that in a dozen buckets of the Colonel's chicken. With homage to Day of the Dead, Aliens, and other, and lots of double entendres, it was so disgusting, it was hilarious.Jason Yachanin and Kate Graham were great in their first film.
