Don't Believe the Hype
I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
Story: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.
This sequel is directed by Dwight H. Little who directed couple of kick ass action movies like "Marked For Death" with Steven Seagal, "Rapid Fire" with Brandon Lee and a good crime thriller "Murder at 1600" with Wesley Snipes. Halloween 4 is suppose to be the rebirth of the series that reintroduces Michael Myers when the character was retired after Halloween II. Because of Myers absence in Halloween III, the movie outraged fans and resulted to be a box office disappointment so Myers was brought back six years later.Halloween 4 begins on October 30th 1988, Michael has been in a comatose state ever since the explosion at the Haddonfield Memorial hospital along with Dr. Loomis 10 years prior from his original killing spree on Halloween night, 1978. Burned and in bandages, Michael is being transferred to Smith Grove sanitarium. While on route, Michael overhears one of the Smith Grove staffs saying that his sister Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) is dead and her daughter Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris) lives in Haddonfield with her foster family. Michael awakens, kills off the staffs and then escapes to Haddonfield to go after his niece. Dr. Loomis is also back after he survived the big explosion, wtf? and drives out to Haddonfield after he learns that Michael escaped. Jamie Lloyd is an innocent little girl who's been going through a difficult time. She misses her mother, mourns her and she feels like an outsider because she doesnt feel like she's being loved by her foster family. She's having nightmares of the boogeyman. She's aware that Michael Myers is her murderous uncle. She also gets bullied, mocked in school by her peers about her mother Laurie being dead and Michael Myers being her boogeyman uncle.. Her life goes into madness when she meets her evil uncle but her stepsister Rachel (Ellie Cornell) is there to protect her. I have a few problems with this film. First, Michael's mask is bad, I dont like it. I know that the white Captain Kirk mask from the original was given to Dick Warlock who played Michael in Halloween II but they could've done a remodel of that mask since this sequel brings back the boogeyman. Second, the stuntman who plays Myers (George P. Wilbur) wore shoulder pads to look "imposing", why? He didnt need that. He looked ridiculous. Third, Nothing against Donald Pleasence but his character should've stood dead. Michael is the only supernatural being in the universe so it's excusable that he survived the explosion because he's pure evil. Oh and Michael's eyes healed. Both of his eyes were shot off by Laurie in Halloween II that blinded him but in H4, he's fine and he can see but again, he's pure evil. Overall, Halloween 4 is a good sequel with good plot, likeable characters, the fall season atmosphere, the action element where Michael has a fight scene with Jamie's older stepsister's boyfriend, Brady. Then near the end Michael knocks off a few armed rednecks that tried to stop him off their pickup truck. Danielle Harris and Ellie Cornell had chemistry playing stepsisters.
Ten years after his original massacre, the invalid Michael Myers awakens and returns to Haddonfield to kill his seven-year-old niece on Halloween. Can Dr. Loomis stop him? After the confusing and terrible Halloween III the Studio decided to make another Halloween movie and brought back both Michael Myers and Dr. Loomis and as good as that may sound the end result is a film where people get stabbed by shotguns and get crashed by Michael's hands, that's right this time he has become a super villain and has powers for some reason and as insane as both Halloween and Halloween II might have been they still worked thanks to good direction and a plot that made sense at least but this time? It was a simple cash grab. (3/10)
Michael is back and just as scary as before. I often watch slashers to laugh at how bad they are, but this was just scary. Again I say spoilers. The ending was perfect. The film built up the Jamie twist. Yes Jason is scary but Michael pretending to be a cop and then impaling a girl with a a shotgun is terrifying. The acting was phenomenal, obviously Pleasence was great but the child actor for Jamie was very good, often child actors are the opposite. Overall great film. Any Myers fan should watch it. 8.8/10.
Michael Myers has been in a coma for 10 years after nearly burning alive. He's been staying at Smith' Grove Sanitarium, but tonight he's being transferred. When Michael learns that he has more living relatives, he miraculously snaps out of his coma and continues his spree."Halloween 4" is where the "Halloween" franchise starts to get just like your average 1980's horror franchise. It's fun having Myers back, and even better when Loomis returns, but it's pretty hard to suspend your disbelief so much much that you just sorta have to accept that Michael Myers has been shot 11 times, burned alive and all he has is scars on his hand. The same goes for Loomis, who only has a facial scar and a limp. The acting in "Halloween 4" is average. The only cast member, besides Donald Pleasance, that jumps out is Danielle Harris. For a child actor, Harris really gives the performance her all. You truly believe she's being mercilessly scared out of her wits by Myers. Ellie Cornel is also good as Danielle Harris' sister, but it feels like her character isn't fleshed out as well as she could be.But, when it comes to atmosphere, "Halloween 4" has it. It's genuinely creepy in a bunch of scenes and there's even a few genuine scares peppered around. George P. Wilbur makes for a good Myers. His presence on screen is intimidating and he definitely has "the walk" down. All in all, "Halloween 4" is a far from perfect film, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it. Sometimes the more soap opera-ish plot points get ridiculous (Ellie Cornel's boyfriend is cheating with a girl she knows), but, for the most part, "Halloween 4" is well balanced in it's plot. Out of all the later sequels, it's the closest in tone to the original. It's recommended, but don't expect to get the meaning of life out of it, unless you think butchering teenagers is the meaning of life.
