I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.

I never watch series, and it never came to my mind that this was supposed to be a pilot film. The final open end, which I rather found funny and I wasn't disappointed at all, suggested that the story had a lot of potential, and I looked for a (planned) sequel. There is none, no series either.I was entertained without a bore, though the characters were a bit too caricatured, but there wasn't too much unnecessary small talk (which I really hate in series and the reason why I don't waste my time watching them) just to fill the time between a too scarce story events. There isn't much of a story, and you almost feel in a kind of survival 3D game with no monsters. Except there isn't much action either. Nevertheless, I was surprised it took me 40th minutes to check my watch, when it felt just like 20 min. and the rest of the movie ended up quite fast.As it stands, its a good B movie, small budget, cheap effects, but professionally well directed with good rhythm.

I found some irritating inconsistencies during this film and put it down to poor writing, but as it turned out it was intentional all along! Such as Ronan driving the first car in the nuke world back to the building, then later on in the film he gets in to the car outside his dad's house and Polly asks if he knows "how to drive one of these things".There are a few more, and if you watch again closely they are sprinkled everywhere. A delight to watch the second time too.Clever writing, believable acting, a bit melodramatic in places and could use some general tinkering with the pacing, and characters telling their life story every 20 mins as a plot device to give the characters the info they need to move forward. Netflix, Amazon, pick this up immediately and move forward, so we can all pay to watch a series.

Oooh the promise this movie had. This movie toyed with a brilliant concept but... just... couldn't... reach..."Parallels", just like the title alludes to, is about parallel universes (or parallel Earths to be more specific). A brother, sister and neighbor stumble upon a building that has the ability to jump them to parallel Earths. The Earths vary from minor differences to major differences and all they want to do is find their father and get back home. The movie starts off great and has some serious promise as they mysteriously end up in another Earth. They are desperate to find answers but the have to navigate their new environment. There is a lot of mystery, danger, suspense and intrigue then it peters out. The three know that they are no longer home but they don't know enough about their new planet, yet they behave as though they do. Instead of being careful they are careless. It just seemed so illogical that it detracted from the overall movie.Couple that with the enormous amount of questions that went unanswered and the movie failed to reach its full potential. They went so far as to end it with the door left wide open for a sequel. Maybe "Parallels" is from a series of books and we've just seen book 1, I don't know. If so, then they have me as a viewer for the sequel. If not, then this was a criminally bad ending.

If you like a couple Slider episodes combined into a full feature length movie, you'll like Parallels. This movie has nothing original on the parallel-Earths theme except a nice looking high rise building, on the exterior, that's completely trashed and tagged on the interior, as the inter-universe vehicle. The key characters come with their own story- line from their original Earth life, a boxing brother and an Ivy League sister with family issues and their nerd-alert lawyer friend from the neighborhood. My fav character is the alluring Constance Wu, who joins them on the first jump, but plays along with their ignorance when she's obviously an experienced traveler. This script creates more questions than it answers, the doppelgangers the travelers find are kind of funny, there is fair to middling action . . . .and that's about it. It views like a TV pilot that never got funded for a full series.
