Very Cool!!!
Sadly Over-hyped
It is both painfully honest and laugh-out-loud funny at the same time.
Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.
Up until today I had only seen two Serbian films*, The Life and Death of a Porno Gang and A Serbian Film, both of which are very 'extreme' but also very good. Killer Mermaid (AKA Nymph) is a far more traditional horror, but nowhere near as impressive. The film features the criminally under-used cannibalistic siren of myth and legend for its monster, but fails to do the scaly terror justice, with a predictable plot, stock characters, poor acting, and weak special effects.Set in Montenegro, the film follows a group of friends who ignore the advice of a strange old man (played by Euro-cinema legend Franco Nero) and pay a visit to a small, supposedly deserted island fort, once used as a concentration camp by the Nazis. There they happen upon another strange old man who has been killing people and feeding them to a man-eating mermaid who lives down a well. With their inflatable dinghy sabotaged, the group must avoid the hook-wielding killer and the deadly fish-woman while trying to find a way off the island.Director Milan Todorovic delivers a fine looking film, with some nice cinematography (including some great aerial drone footage), good use of his location, and plenty of shots of his attractive female cast members in skimpy clothing. His handling of the story, however, leaves much to be desired, with too much padding and repetitive action frequently resulting in tedium. The film also fails to deliver on the gore front, with only a grisly beheading worthy of mention (the head removed with a length of spinal column attached). The final act, in which the surviving members square off against the siren is drawn out and unexciting.Based on this film, I think the Serbians should stick to the extreme stuff: they're better at it.*I tell a lie: I've just realised that I've also seen Zone of the Dead, another film by Todorovic, but had forgotten all about it because, according to my own review, it's crap.
For a movie called "Killer Mermaid" this has surprisingly very little mermaid action in it, it takes an hour before the promised killer mermaid action actually starts (unless you count the beginning teaser). In the first 30 minutes or so it still kept my interest a bit, a lot having to do with the beautiful Serbia Monetenegro landscape that I haven't really seen in a movie before. The characters also feels a little more three-dimensional than the usual 2d stereotypes that cheap creature features like this usually offers. Not that any of the characters are all that interesting tho and once the action does start in the second half the clichés starts piling up.The acting is okay although the accents get a little distracting from time to time and make the dialog sound unnatural for most of the cast. It's not the worst movie I've seen or anything but it's not particularly good either, if you're looking for a mermaid horror movie I suggest SHE CREATURE (2001) instead.
Worst then Sharknado and is not the "best" worst like... is that awful. Such as it is, the story is a classic, school development plot filled properly announced crafts and discharging, what many would call the existing cliché whereby. This determination can be made only if the cliché is understood as something most universal and also the best that has survived in two thousand and seven hundred years of dramatic tradition, and if you repeat the formula is understood as part of the entertainment. The film and other elements used genre conventions and pop-cultural references, especially when tension during chase solves the camera in motion, and dreadful ambiance far totals and nautical passages. An incredibly pathetic achievement.
On a picturesque holiday a group of old old and new friends take a trip to an off limit island and find something thought to be of only fantasy. With a skimpy dressed cast in amongst the nice scenery and locations there's blood filled impalement, beheading, hacking, stabbings and a creepy Mermaid. Nymph is a strong horror entry especially during it's atmospheric night segments as men are enticed by the sounds of the mermaid. The interesting aged Montenegero locations add a different look and feel to the proceedings. At times reminiscent of Dagon, to director Milan Todorovic's credit it sets the scene with an early killing, then builds up to a claret finale while taking a leaf out of Jaws (1975) book by keeping the 'monster' unseen until the final act.Played straight, the actress Zorana Kostic Obradovic and Mina Sablic's mermaid steal the show, second to Miodrag Krstovic, a Castro lookalike protagonist and of course there's Franco Nero in a fitting role as Niko- an old salty sea dog amongst the easy on the eye cast including the notable Natalie Burn, Sofija Rajovic and Kristina Klebe. Yes some cast members sometimes struggle with the English dialogue, accents and the editing and pacing at times is a little off but it adds to the quirky off beat charm that Nymph/Mamula/Killer Mermaid posses. Overall, this Euro part horror mystery, part slasher flick and campfire tale does what it says on the fantasy horror tin. Entertaining.
