It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
The movie really just wants to entertain people.
Just about any boy who grew up in the 2000s was well acquainted with George, Harold, and their superhero friend Captain Underpants. The original books by Dave Pilkey were just fun books to get kids interested in reading. They had a lot of gross out humor, goofy jokes, and illustrations on every page. They were just simply fun. The movie is best when you put yourself in the mindset you were in when you were the age of George and Harold, when you just wanted to have fun and being with your friends at school was the most important thing in the world to you. That being said, kids will find it much easier to appreciate than adults, even the ones that were kids when the original books came out. The animation is notable, as it is strikingly accurate to the illustrations in the original books. Much like with the Peanuts Movie, it distinguishes it as a "Captain Underpants movie" rather than "another animated movie." It takes the story from several books, notably the first and fourth. It goes into George and Harold's friendship and their conflict with Mr. Krupp, Captain Underpants' origin, and has Professor Poopypants and Melvin as the villains. It also finds a way to bring Flip-O-Rama to the big screen, which was a welcome surprise. A lot of kid's movies try to have a lesson or moral in them. This doesn't. This just wants to have fun and be fun. It also features the voice talent of Kevin Hart. If you grew up with the Captain Underpants books, this will be a great nostalgia trip for you. It's everything the books were - fun, goofy, and immature.
This film isn't intended for adults, but as a Parent who watches many films with his little boy I found it very entertaining in comparison to many of the others that he likes. The style of Animation is very good, individually identifiable, vivid and very colourful, with different styles of animation adopted throughout for various reasons ...even has sock puppets! Good Voice cast, lots of childish humour, and it has a good use of music (at a good volume ratio to the dialogue, not overly loud), the tune at the credits is very catchy. Check this out, my boy is almost four and has watched this several times since it's release on iTunes.
Capturing the spirit of the silly source books almost perfectly, this self-referential big screen adaptation never takes itself too seriously and is just a joy to watch because of it. There are more than a few laughs to be found in 'Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017)' and the whimsical nature of the feature, which exists firmly in it's own world where the fourth wall is merely a suggestion and the fabric of the film itself is as tangible a dimension as time, keeps a smile on your face from beginning to end as the movie packs as many amusing animation styles, successfully sly in-jokes (much to the delight of fans of the books) and uproarious potty humour puns as possible into its lean ninety-minute frame. Don't expect a masterpiece, but do expect to laugh at 'Uranus' once again. 7/10
Just loved this film from start to finish a joy ride from opening credits to the end please can we have another
