The Worst Film Ever
A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
My friends and I have watched this film on countless occasions, gathered around a TV laughing our cares away. I can not exaggerate the impact this film has had on my development as a person and a father. My favourite character is Bill Whitaker, a man who resembles someone we all know and cherish. The story of his struggle with his alcoholism, and his sexuality is both painful and inspiring for the viewer. The comedic value of Johan Hill is inspired, as he replicates the accent and mannerisms of the average Texan perfectly. Peter Dante is another star of the film for me and many others I am sure, his shark attack scene is filmed and acted with ultimate precision. I would know as I have seen a shark attack once, on a cruse holiday in south Africa. A big shark came and ate one of the natives in one bite. The shark made it away with no charge, scott free, highlighting the problems South Africa has with its police and judiciary system. A deeply troubled country that really needs invading and colonising. All in all this is a tale of woe and joy as well as being, possibly one of the greatest films ever created.
what might have been a brilliant series of short clips on funnyjunk or youtube, this film (and i use the term loosely here) is a complete waste of your time. any laughs that can be found in this film are all condensed down into the 2 minute trailer. watching the full hour and a half film will leave you disappointed and with an awful taste in your mouth. while the movie is studded with very capable actors (steve zahn and jonah hill) the characters they play are entirely forgettable, the plot is utterly pointless, the gags are not only cheap but unfunny the majority of the time. seriously, your time is better spent just watching the shark scene from this movie on youtube for 187 minutes than the actual film.
Strange Wilderness is a good, if not particularly memorable, stoner comedy revolving around a young slacker (Steve Zahn) who inherits a wildlife television show from his father. Unfortunately, he and his stoner buddies manage to get the show canceled, and their only hope is to get footage of Bigfoot down in Ecuador.Sound stupid? Well, it is, but it still manages to get a lot of laughs, even if they are not particularly original. Some of the highlights, such as a dentally challenged shark, are well known from YouTube, but there are still plenty of laughs to be had, including a scene involving a decidedly ferocious turkey. The whole thing is held together by Steve Zahn, whose charisma makes even many of the lamer jokes funny. The film definitely has flaws. Many of the jokes, particularly in the first half, fall flat, and Jonah Hill does little with his character other than act stoned. Furthermore, many of the jokes are easy to predict in advance. Still, it's a great comedy for a boring afternoon.
Will it win an award? No.Is it the dumbest god damn thing ever put to celluloid? Probably. Is it also insanely funny? Hell yes.Does it achieve it's goal of making you laugh/killing time while you wait for a pizza to arrive before you watch The Bicycle Thieves or The Third Man? Yeah, and that's how I started watching this movie. My friends and I rented about eight of the best films ever made, then picked this one up because our local video store didn't have a copy of Miller's Crossing.It...rocked. In a night of the greatest movies ever made, we still loved this film for actually accomplishing it's only goal: making you cry with laughter.
