i must have seen a different film!!
At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.
Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
"A man has an idea. The idea attracts others, like-minded. The idea expands. The idea becomes the institution. What was the idea?" - Top Dollar (Michael Wincott) in the original "The Crow"So, a murdered ex-con comes back from the dead, paints himself up like a member of the KISS Army, and goes after the Satanic cult that killed him and his girlfriend - a cult led by Tara Reid and the guy from "Bones". The premise of "The Crow: Wicked Prayer", the fourth and (here's hoping) final entry in the "The Crow" franchise, sounds like the setup to a joke... and well, it is a joke. Not a funny one, though."The Crow: Wicked Prayer" is the final nail in the "Crow" series' coffin. The acting, dialog and direction is awful, and the setup is both ridiculous and boring. Not one character on screen could be recognized as a real person. Really, it doesn't get much worse than this.To think the franchise started off with such promise. The 1994 film "The Crow" did something that had never been done before: it took elements of the ghost story and revenge thriller genres and told a story about characters we liked and cared about. It had real, human heart to go along with the balletic violence and Gothic set pieces. That, and the late Brandon Lee's iconic performance, made the film a wonderful experience, one of those rare movies you can watch over and over again, each time finding something new. Then Edward R. Pressman Films, the studio that produced the movie, smelled money, and started grinding out sequels, each one worse than the last. "The Crow: City of Angels" was dull and lifeless, and "The Crow: Salvation" was incoherent and silly. "The Crow: Wicked Prayer" has the dubious distinction of being far and away the worst of these sequels.A certain amount of melodrama is to be expected in the revenge movie genre, but "Wicked Prayer" is as histrionic as a teenager's dream journal. Should you actually decide to watch this movie, it's my duty to warn you that you'll have to listen to lines like "Revenge is easy - forgetting is hard", "You owe me two lives and a pair of perfect blue eyes", and my personal favorite, "Quoth the raven nevermore, motherf---er!". It doesn't help that director Lance Muniga doesn't seem to know the difference between a film and a music video; he substitutes explosions, pointless jump cuts and imitation "Matrix" fight choreography for plot, character and dialog. He doesn't know how to cast or work with actors, either. Edward Furlong is horribly miscast as an undead avenger: he pouts, whines, and looks like a trick-or-treater in the Crow makeup. We don't care if he gets revenge or not. David Boreanz and Tara Reid are quite possibly the least intimidating Satanists ever seen on film - they call each other "dawg" and "shorty", fer Chrissakes. And poor Dennis Hopper just looks embarrassed in a cameo as a Satanic priest who speaks in Ebonics ("The devil will be your homey forevermore!"). Like the "Jaws" sequels and the Joel Schumacher "Batman" movies, "The Crow: Wicked Prayer" is depressing to watch. A brilliant idea has been co-opted and ruined by a bunch of amateurs. The idea has become the institution. It's time to move on.
When you go about seeing all of Danny Trejo, you are bound to find a few films that are pretty poor. This is one of them. Now, I have not seen any other "Crow" films, so I can't compare this one to the first three. I am just rating it alone as a Danny Trejo vehicle. We have a Satanic cult with Yuji Okumoto as Pestilence, Marcus Chong as War, Tito Ortiz as Famine, David Boreanaz (Bones, Angel, Buffy) as Death and Satan, and Tara Reid, who has appeared with fellow lousy actors Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy in films you never want to see, as Lola.Weak dialog, and direction that went all over the place characterized this film. It just didn't have a direction.
If I told you this was a low budget, straight to obscure cable channel, knock off of a crow film you would probably believe me. If you told me it was a genuine "Crow" film I would laugh and call you a liar...and you would be right and I would be wrong and that just is insane. Why did they even bother? They have some famous names here that apparently were paid just enough for them to actually turn up and "phone in" a performance. I've seen nativity plays with better performances.Edward Furlong as the crow? His "angry" face and lines through gritted teeth were unconvincing, absolutely no fear or sense that this guy was about to kick ass was purveyed. I couldn't believe how bland and whiny his crow was. He was the wrong choice, his stature, boyish looks, and poor acting skills made him look like an annoyed teenager pestering people. With the cast this had and the performances I've seen them give elsewhere this was just shameful. Maybe they had a bad script, or no direction, or everyone had the flu? but these people know better than this. The attempts to define the characters of War, Famine, and Pestilence were worse than a B movie horror flick made by film students. If you love the crow as a character don't watch this...it ruins it. If you don't or don't yet, still don't watch this as you never will from this performance.
I get lucky, and i get to see the latest "worst movie i've ever seen." Last night was just about that time for a new piece of garbage to take the crown. Thanks be to The Crow: Wicked Prayers for supplying me a few thoughts which will take me away from getting any work done for the next half hour or so.Firstly, i'd like to submit my appreciation for Edward Furlong. I like Edward furlong. Terminator 2, Detroit Rock City, American History X, etc. However; Casting Mr. Furlong as The Crow, a supernatural, consummate badass, hellbent on a particularly gory/sadistic style of vengeance = ignorant. Would you please just compare him, for a split second, to Brandon Lee (the original Crow). Does Edward Furlong possess a SINGLE MUSLCE in that pasty little body of his? Has he ever had training in Stage Combat, or any sort of Martial Art? (there's no evidence of that in this movie). Does he possess, even to the smallest degree, some kind of raspy, Lazarus-inspired, 'back-from-the-grave-to-get-you-sucka' voice that a dark hero should have? The answer to these questions, and the prospect of Ed Furlong being The Crow is simply "NO." Thankfully for Edward, the Crow character is featured in a monstrous black leather duster, or we would be even more exposed to his awkward body in all it's superhero shortcomings.Secondly, why are some actors so oblivious to what can only amount to a god-awful career decision? More power to Tito Ortiz. That's the absolute best performance that Tito Ortiz could conjure up, i'm sure. But, Dennis Hopper, Tara Reid, and David Boreanaz?????? Do these fine pillars of the entertainment industry in Hollywood not have a single employee checking out scripts and projects on their behalf before they're committed to them? F$&*, hire me!!!! I'll save you the embarrassment of being in these god awful movies before you have to see yourself on MTV2 or the Sci-fi channel at 2 am. AND, Danny Trejo! Please never do another movie not connected with Quentin Tarrantino, Robert Rodriguez, or Rob Zombie...The script is horrendous, Dennis Hopper's dialog alone will provide proof that the writer collaborated with his 8 yr old/gangsta nephew on this one. The story is ludicrous. The effects...let's just say at this point that this movie is bad!! Long story short, the individuals who make up the cast are interesting, well-established actors. None of them should have appeared in this movie. None of them should have been cast in the roles in which they were in this movie. None of them should ever speak to anyone about the fact that they've contributed to the completion of this movie. This movie is a formidable opponent to everything that Paris Hilton has been a part of (and the Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, Superhero Movie, franchise) for most god awful crap we humans can put on film...
