A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.

Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.

Not worth my time, Flynt was a pig, period. He wasn't fighting for your free speech you losers, he was fighting because in porn, there is a lot of money, for men like him. He makes whores out of people, then he gets most of the money, they usually contract a disease. Read the history, wake up, liberalism is a lie. This movie should sit well with filthy liberals, but decent people will avoid it. -20 stars.

It's a bit of a cliché to say that you'll either 'love or hate' the film 'The People vs Larry Flynt,' but the reason I open with such a phrase is largely down to the source material, i.e. real life. It's a semi-biopic picture which tells the story of self-titled 'King of p0rn' Larry Flynt and his rise to power, largely with the (in)famous adult publication 'Hustler.' I suppose how much you enjoy the film comes down to how much you see things from his point of view. It does portray him in quite a sympathetic light (largely for the first half!) so, if you're very 'anti-adult publications' then you'll probably see him as an modern day devil in human form, hell bent on corrupting the morals of the nation. However, if you're more liberal in your reading material then you'll probably tolerate Woody Harrelson's performance for longer.I mentioned that he's effectively the 'hero' (although I should probably call him an 'anti-hero!') for the first half of the film. I suppose it's because he gets slowly more hardened and cynical before finally developing an attitude which generally feels like he's at war with the world and simply wants to annoy everyone he comes into contact with (mainly judges!). This is the point in the story where even his most die-hard supporters start to lose patience with him, for he becomes a little unlikeable, which can go some way to impact on your enjoyment of the film.As if the characters weren't controversial enough, the film-makers even chose one of the most controversial figures of the modern age to co-star, i.e. Courtney Love. She plays Larry Flynt's 'love interest' and opinion – naturally, it seems – is divided on how successful her (arguably) biggest on-screen role turned out. One school of through is that she was amazing as the drug-fuelled woman in Larry Flynt's life, others simply say that she was merely playing an extension of her true self. Special mention to Edward Norton who – amazingly – gets overshadowed by the more 'larger than life' performances in the film. He's probably the most 'sympathetic' character among the batch as he plays Larry Flint's long-suffering lawyer who is left practically tearing his hair out in frustration when it comes to his client's antics. As far as I can tell, 'The People Vs Larry Flynt' is a pretty accurate depiction of the events in the p0rn baron's life, so if you think you need to know about the way the law attempted to 'protect' the public against the world's seedy underbelly then give this one a go. The performances are all spot on and whether you like the film will go hand in hand with how much you're interested in the history of the subject matter and how much you can tolerate slightly infuriating on-screen characters.

Well, considering I'm a law school student and I have always enjoyed 90's courtroom dramas, Larry Flint's story couldn't stand only in my wish list. That being said, last night I rented it and had a good time. "The People vs. Larry Flynt" differs from the main movies of the genre due to its eccentric characters, professionally portrayed by Woody Harrelson and Courtney Love. Harrelson's character is a man who does everything in his power to innovate and provoke the society, in order to expand the idea that we can't just accept what people say to us; we have to use our minds and do what we feel like doing, as long as it doesn't negatively affect other people's lives-- and that's an ideology I've always agreed with. His wife, on the other hand, is an uneducated girl who spent her youth years working with him in the pornography industry, never seeming to care whether it was right or wrong, good or bad. Also, she is the one who helps Larry Flynt's fell apart, abusing of prescribed drugs. One sad thing I have to admit is that I actually LAUGHED at her behavior; I mean, she looked so junkie and crazy, mainly in the court scenes, that it felt absurd to see her that way. The juridical aspect of the movie isn't very elaborated or analyzed, given that the dramatical aspects of Flint's life are more in evidence than anything else. So, if you're looking for strong courtroom dramas, there are several better ones out there, like "Red Corner" and "Primal Fear". In case you'd rather see a drama involving someone's life, including its problems with the judiciary, this film is a good choice.

Growing up in the backwoods of Kentucky, Larry Flint would make moonshine as a kid. As an adult, Larry Flynt (Woody Harrelson) runs a strip club in Cincinnati. Althea Leasure Flynt (Courtney Love) is the new strippers. Then he publishes Hustler magazine as a regular guy's Playboy. It gets notoriety with the publication of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis pics. The brash offensive pornographer comes to the attention of righteous Charles Keating (James Cromwell) and gets charged. Alan Isaacman (Edward Norton) is his lawyer in the long running battle with the government. It's a great performance from Woody Harrelson in one of the most compelling modern characters. Love him or hate him, one cannot ignore Larry Flynt. Also one should not ignore this performance. Surprisingly Courtney Love gives a coherent and wonderful performance. It's a quick moving movie despite a lot of courtroom drama. It takes a dirty subject and shines a light on a brighter meaning.
