Excellent, a Must See
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
This is a gorgeous movie made by a gorgeous spirit.
The acting in this movie is really good.
I thought this was a pretty decent black comedy/psychological thriller. However what made this low budget film stand out was the performance by the actor David Hyde Pierce. I don't really know much about this actor and don't remember seeing him in other films, but he did a spot on job with this one. As this psychotic, schizophrenic and whimsical pathological liar. He played a very intriguingly awkward and outrageous character in this. A character named Warwick Wilson who is mentally unbalanced but also knows how to play mental games. Overall, I enjoyed this decent movie because of the performances and the drive of the characters.6.5/10
John Taylor (Clayne Crawford) is on the run after injuring his foot during his bank robbery with his girlfriend Simone who works as a bank teller. He cons his way into the home of Warwick Wilson (David Hyde Pierce) as a friend of a friend. Warwick is busy preparing for a dinner party but he is also hiding disturbing shocking secrets. This would be more intriguing as a two-person movie. At least, it would be more interesting to see David Hyde Pierce try to fill the entire screen with his crazy character. He seems capable and the attempt would have value whether successful or not. Clayne Crawford is a functional second. It might be better for a scarier actor. The second twist with Warwick is interesting although the ending needs some changes.
The Perfect Host is a great showcase of a thriller/suspense. Being held captive is bad enough, but to be treated as Taylor was must make it 10x worse. There are a few flaws but none too bad that you can't look past. One being: how did he hurt his foot? This is the question most are dwelling over, hut it is simple, he is a criminal on the run, and he easily could've been shot, or tripped over some barbed-wire. Nothing too hard to comprehend. A teeth-clenching finale shows how corrupt people may be, as well as how delusional one man can become after years and years of loneliness. It was a sad moment when Warrick stood back up after being "stabbed" with his fake knife. I was actually rooting for John to leave, at least somewhat, unscathed, but anger and aggression took him over. The ending would've never happened if Warrick hadn't had knives and swords hanging on his wall. The other most seen question, or complaint, is: How convenient is it that Warrick just so happened to be a policeman? The answer is quite simple: John Taylor's arrival to Warrick's home was a planned event. It wasn't just chance that he stumbled upon an unwillingly friendly samaritan who turned out to be an undercover cop. He was followed, tracked, and almost forced to go to Warrick's.
Very pleasantly surprised by The Perfect Host. This film has a little bit of everything: a dark side, comedic relief, twists and turns, crime...and a gracious host (well-played by David Hyde Pierce)! David Hyde Pearce (in character) has a most amazing and peculiar dinner party complete with a multitude of interesting guests. His dark side begins to show near the beginning of the film when a surprise guest (played by Clayne Crawford) arrives. What follows is extremely entertaining, dark, humorous, psychologically thrilling and to say more would spoil this film. The twists and turns in this piece of perfection lead to a perfect ending! David Hyde Pearce's performance is so well-done and charismatic that you can't help but watch all the way through, even twice! Great, intense, and thrilling film! Can't recommend it enough!
