How sad is this?
All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
Watching it is like watching the spectacle of a class clown at their best: you laugh at their jokes, instigate their defiance, and "ooooh" when they get in trouble.
"Give me your heart" - This was actually a fairly good story about giving your heart for valentine's day. This segment had a wonderfully disturbing character, whom was very nicely acted."St. Patricks Day" - Well, I found this segment to be a very odd and bizarre story about a woman being pregnant with a reptile. With that being said, it should be said, in all fairness, that it was nicely acted. And it was definitely among some of the more weird things I have seen in a movie."Easter" - Now, this was a wonderful combination of mixing the commercialized Easter tradition with the biblical version. I must admit that I have never seen a half-rabbit, half-Jesus creature before now."Mothers Day" - A very pointless story, which didn't really fit into the anthology all that that greatly."Father's Day" - This was the opposite of the "Mother's Day" segment, as it was very nicely narrated. And it was certainly a very suspenseful and thrilling addition to the anthology, although the ending was somewhat anti-climatic."Halloween" - While it was a very entertaining segment, it seemed somewhat out of place here. I guess it was the sex industry backdrop that didn't work well to fit into the anthology."Christmas" - Surely had an interesting concept about seeing yourself and your actions through virtual reality glasses. And it was a twisted story indeed that fitted nicely into the anthology. It was nice to see Seth Green here."New Year's" - Ah, now this was among the most entertaining and surprising of all the stories in the anthology and definitely one of my favorite segments. If you enjoy horror anthology, then perhaps you should check out "Holidays", as it has different themes, yet still all combined underneath the universal theme of holidays. You might actually find something unique, very entertaining and suitable for your particular preference here.
This is a collection of short horror stories themed by different holidays. The ideas and stories are somewhat good and interesting. The scripts - especially endings - are quite rushed tho. I was surprised how often the ending seemed completely random. As if the whole episode was just a build up (and many are good at that), then they just suddenly pull the plug without any explanation and proceed to another episode. The episodes are really short, which makes this an easy watch, you don't have time to get bored as it's mostly a build up after a build up. There were a few with a proper ending tho.The direction and acting are pretty good for the most part. There are some episodes that are really good looking with a lot of emphasis put on style, cinematography etc. Stylistically very different, but you can see that the directors have had fun directing these episodes. Many directors I had never even heard of, but even tho the styles vary and differ a lot, they are mostly very well directed. Some of the stand out episodes for me were st. patrick's and father's day, which was probably the best even tho the ending sucked big time. Kevin Smith is the big name in this compilation, but I wouldn't say horror is his forte. His episode has Kevin Smith written all over it with snappy dialog and "adult/potty humour". The new years episode had pretty interesting style and acting.Interesting for the stylistic efforts, but clearly too short stories (maybe 10 min each) for anything serious.
Holidays is a anthology movie that is comprised of 8 shorts, each with a different holiday as a main theme. Now with a premise like that you would think that this would be an amazing movie, especially with the likes of Kevin Smith directing one of the shorts. But sometimes even the easiest ideas are horribly botched. Was this movie a disaster...well...kinda.From the start I was expecting that not all shorts are gonna be the same quality, but what I was not expecting is that only 2 shorts were scary. The best short and the most frightening by far is the Easter one.Truly horrifying and twisted it captured that sense of old school horror with a newer looking monster. My second favorite is The New Year short,it had a predictable twist but I nonetheless enjoyed it.Before I start rambling about the not so good shorts,I would like to talk about one that left me completely disappointed. It wasn't necessary bad but it was just wasted potential. The short in question was Father's Day.It was if I am not mistaken the shortest one but still it had so much potential. The directing and cinematography were Spielberg level of great.I was in awe at some of the scenes, truly breathtaking...and then the ending came and ruined everything. And when I say everything I mean everything. It just destroyed everything that it was trying to hype up...utterly disappointing.I am not gonna talk a lot about the other 5 shorts, because in my opinion they all suffer from the same problem more or less. They are just not scary or even interesting. They all feel rushed and a lot of the story is just left out for cheap scares".Kevin Smith especially disappointed me.His short Halloween was by far the worst one.Valentine's day,Mothers day and Christmas were so incredibly boring, dumb and riddled with plot holes that it was almost unwatchable. In the end I thought Holidays was a mixed bag.It had 2 good shorts,1 mediocre one and 5 bad ones.In my opinion I don't suggest watching this one,but if you are really interested in the movie, watch the Easter short and New Year's one on Youtube because its not worth watching the rest of it to get to the good parts.
I mostly just logged on here to talk about the Halloween segment, which was directed by Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy). This was one of the weaker shorts and it ends with a guy apparently being electrocuted by a car battery attached to a dildo inserted into his anus.Has anyone actually ever been electrocuted by a car battery? Nope. As is commonly known, the voltage is too low to get through the skin. Go outside, find a car, lick two fingers and put them on the terminals. At best you'll feel a mild tingling.OK I know films aren't meant to be entirely real world accurate, but hey, I expected a bit more from Kevin Smith. But wait you say - the wires were right inside his arse, so the current didn't have to go through the skin. And they attached another wire to his head so that the current would flow right through his body. The girls were actually trained electricians. They knew what they were doing. Maybe they cranked up the voltage using a mcGyver type device they put together in a real hurry.Meh, come on Kevin Smith. This really felt like an abysmal student film. The rest of the shorts are better, although there's a lot of unsatisfying endings. It's a decent horror anthology, inconsistent but better than the average single horror release in my opinion.
