Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
Blistering performances.
A film that pays homage and respect to old Hollywood hard boiled noir films completely straight and without parody. Rian Johnson, now known for Looper and Star Wars, gives us a fantastic debut about a high school drama inspired equally by David Lynch and Howard Hawks. The film will wonderfully directed by Johnson, which for being a first effort, bleeds style in everything from the direction, the shot composition, the dialogue, and the narrative structure. For being made with a budget of a little under $500,000, the movie never feels cheap nor does it ever grow dull. The cinematography is also well done, almost feeling anime-inspired, specifically by Cowboy Bebop. The only negatives of this film is that sometimes the narrative of the film can get confusing and muddled and that the style sometimes seems to saturate the meat of the film. Overall, Brick is a movie I would recommend to any film student or amateur director getting started. The perfect example of what you could do on a modest budget, an idea, and the drive to follow your passion.
Brick is a moody atmospheric mystery film with dialogues straight out of a 1940's hard-boiled detective masterpiece with visuals influenced cowboy bebop, the film takes place in a High School and you might think that teenager doing detective work is silly well the movie makes jokes about that, the film is very cheap in a good way because the film is about high schoolers so it adds to the mystique, the sound quality is little muddied in some places and will i do like the dialogue it does sound a little confusing because of sound quality, some of the side characters are under used, overall the movie is great you should watch it
So this film does well to hold up for about an hour with its plot, but all hell seems to break lose towards the end. The film does little to no effort to render its dialogue clear enough for what is a very convoluted narrative. It's the sort of story that takes focusing just reading on paper, let alone on the screen when the lines are being delivered in real time with absolutely no attempt to space themselves. This is one of the ones that tries to be complex, but just turns out complicated; tries to be clever but feels way too self-satisfied and, just, muffled. Not that a film needs to be completely obvious, but this surely is the other extreme. It takes every ounce of focus to get what's happening from scene to scene, who does what to who and why and who did what when, and the final chapter is just a concentrated dose of that and feels quite exhausting...for a small reward. Frustrating watch. Too bad, they really had something to work with.
The Brick is quite like many film noirs as it includes a very cynical protagonist who has some shady dealings, he is also trying to solve a crime in a dark and mysterious setting, finally there is definitely a femfatal or two. However, unlike other more classic film noirs it takes place in or close to the present and as opposed to fallowing a hardened criminal or a private detective, it fallows an angry albeit intelligent high school student, with most of the other characters being teenagers too. As such the film is classified as a neo noir film. This style gives it all the charm of most noir films with a new back drop. This is a large part of the reason why I found the movie so enjoyable. The movie like many great noir films leaves you jumping at shadow and confused Intel the end. Although the film can often be a little confusing do to the unusual dialog and terminology of the film but this does add something to the mystery and some thing to the atmosphere of the film so in the end it can be forgiven for them. So if your looking for a good noir film that has something new then this is the film for you.
