If you don't like this, we can't be friends.
It's complicated... I really like the directing, acting and writing but, there are issues with the way it's shot that I just can't deny. As much as I love the storytelling and the fantastic performance but, there are also certain scenes that didn't need to exist.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
The first thing you need to know about Club Dread is that it is not to be taken seriously. It's basically a comedy, but with horror thrown in. It doesn't so much as lampoon the genre, as adhere to it. Storywise, it's actually your average slasher film. An unknown killer stalks an island full of annoyingly-fit teenagers and knifes them to death. Nothing new there. Nothing new in the whole film really, but that doesn't mean it's not worth watching. It's basically fun. It never tries to be serious and shouldn't be taken as such. If you like slasher films in general, you should like this. The only downside I found (or rather something I felt was a missed opportunity) were the death scenes. The whole film is surprisingly UNgory for a supposed (half) horror film. As the film-makers are also playing to a comedy audience, you'd think they'd be more creative with the (many) death scenes. There's certainly scope for it. However, every death is a simple stabbing or slice - hardly imaginative. But, it's more comedy than horror, so perhaps I'm expecting too much. Basically, as many other reviewers have said, it's basically Froday 13th meets Porkies and I can't really add anything to that.
Clearly I am not one for Broken Lizard's stuff. There certainly seems to be audience for this stuff, but I am obviously not apart of this audience. From the rather dubious opening which was filled with sexual tension (not that I mind!) It was just the way it was done. I cannot believe Bill Paxton was apart of this crud. This is the guy who had the hilarious turn in True Lies; one of the best character actors of all time in my opinion, and he's relegated himself to this? Why Bill. Why?! The best thing about this movie is probably the gore. It has a decent amount of bloodshed, but one crucial error. IT LACKS LAUGHS! That is why you made this movie, right guys?Final Thoughts: This was terrible in my opinion. This is not worth the mediocrity you will go through. Give it a miss3/10
The staff of Coconut Pete's Coconut Beach Resort are dedicated to delivering sun, sea, and sex to a hedonistic crowd of fun-seeking part-goers, but when a serial killer begins to bump them off one-by-one, the partying stops and the panic begins.I'm a big fan of extremely hot women in teeny bikinis, and I always welcome a bit of senseless violence in my films; serve these ingredients up with generous helping of humour and I'm usually good to go. On this basis, Broken Lizard's Club Dread looked to be a surefire winner.Unfortunately, not only is the comedy in this film exceedingly puerile and poorly delivered, but most of the characters are irritating in the extreme, particularly Putman, the dread-locked Indian with the English accent (who couldn't die soon enough as far as I was concerned) and Bill Paxton's hippie singer Coconut Pete (who I may have found funny if I knew who the hell Jimmy Buffet was... but I doubt it!).Admittedly, the film's makers keep their promise of much quality female flesh and there is the odd genuinely creepy scene enlivened by a smattering of gore, but Club Dread's complete and utter lack of decent laughs ultimately negates all the good work done by the semi-naked babes and the machete wielding maniac.
I know a lot of people probably don't agree with giving stupid movies like this an 8, but it is actually funny. I was skeptical to first see it because it looked kind of goofy, but since i loved super troopers i thought i'd give it a try.The film is basically about a vacation island in which all you do is party. But when a killer starts running wild, everybody scrambles to find out who is doing this.I think Steve Lemme (Juan) did the best job as the divemaster, just because of his accent and the funny lines that he had. As said by others, most people will just think of this film as an average comedy/horror spoof, but i think it is better than others. At least give it a try to see the hot Brittany Daniel in a bathing suit almost the entire movie.8/10
