everything you have heard about this movie is true.
This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
I really wanted to give this a great review, but.... the main nagging point I had with this film was the one line that kept being repeated through out the film," Never underestimate the strength of the common man." I could not believe the number of times they had SRK use it , as I not only lost count. It was nauseaus.
Rahul is a sweet seller and is a man who has not had the pleasures of free time with young women his age or his friends because he is always investing his time helping or hanging out with his grandfather. However, his grandfather dies and he is invited to go out on vacation with his friends to Goa, but his grandmother asks him to pour his grandfather's ashes in a specific sacred river in the south. On Rahul's journey he faces obstacles and a girl Meena who is the daughter of the godfather of the south. Meena runs away for her father (the don) frequently so she does not have marry Tangaballi, who will in return give the Godfather of the south more power over the people. Moreover, we get to see the perspective of marriage in India is different from the united states, instead of having a choice to marry who you want to, some women around the world, such as the ones in India, are forced into marriage to benefit their family and or pay off a debt , or used for their dowry. Tantamount to gold digging for men essentially. However, after Meena and Rahul fall in love at the end of the movie, Rahul presents some inspirational words to Meena's father and to the audience.Rahul states the injustice the godfather of the south has committed to his daughter and how he is not a man worthy of calling her his daughter because of the way he treats her and he adds in the fact that it is the 60th anniversary for women's independence in the country (women's rights). Then at the very end of the movie, Rahul states that there are over 1,600 languages in India, but love has no language. In America money, languages, political, religious, environmental, and cultural behaviors can deter people from even thinking marrying a person or ever speaking to them. However, Rahul is telling Meena that he loves her for who she is and nothing could ever be a barrier in his relationship with meena. Ultimately, we see unconditional love in this film. In America, people are afraid to step up to the rich, famous, or public figures however we see in this film that Rahul's love for Meena does not let her father get in the way of him trying to marry her. Consequently, he steps up to the godfather and sticks up for meena in his own language and also does not care about his status in the south. Thereafter, we see that a little voice can go a long way.
What it's about: Chennai Express is about a rich forty-five-year-old bachelor, named Rahul, living in Mumbai. His parents were killed in a car accident when he was very young, so his grandparents took their role as guardians. Rahul gets invited to a friends vacation trip right before his grandfathers 100th birthday. However, Rahul's grandfather dies on the day of his birthday, while watching cricket. Soon after his death, Rahul's grandmother tells him that his grandfather wanted to be buried in two different places. One in Ganga and the other in Rameswaram. She asks Rahul to take the ashes with him to dump but comes to see him off. However, Rahul forgets to take the ashes and almost misses his train when he tries to get the ashes back. But as he tries to leave he helps a woman and four men board the train causing him to miss his chance to get off. Rahul finds out that the women, Meena, was being chased by the four men( who happen to be goons of Meenas powerful father). Meena tells her father when the goons return her to her father along with Rahul that they are in love and plan to get married. Along their journey to deceive her father they fall in love and get married. This Hindi film was quite intriguing to me, a newcomer to foreign films. What's good: For a person new to Hindi films, Chennai Express definitely raised my opinion towards them. It had many scenes that could be attributed to a typical Hollywood comedy film, such as action, minor drama scenes, big star cast, and the well known big finale car crashes. I also enjoyed how the film starts with a flashback of Rahul and is narrated by him as well narrated by him as well. The acting was astonishing and enthusiastic. Overall Chennai Express is a movie that is meant to bring a smile to your face with its singing, dancing, and many melodramatic scenes.
The idea of a silly Bollywood film such as a Chennai Express seems to the opposite of something I would enjoy watching. But when you have been viewing some very serious, and depressing films, the ridiculous film give a break and takes your perception out of the real world. It puts your mind into a state of happiness and laughter, even though you may have no idea what is going on. The film is really just a true love story, with a few different things. Rahul, who is the main character, isn't the first person you would imagine to fight for his love. When he does fight for his love, Meena, he does it in such a confusing way. He doesn't really actually fight for his love until the very end of the move. The rest of time he confuses or talks his way out the fight. And the way the film is edited, Rahul's voice speeds up when he is "fighting." It makes for a very entertaining film. The fact that Rahul is accidentally placed in a world controlled by Meena's father and the fact he has no idea what he is getting into all combined with Meena's seriousness, make for the perfect duo. You may not understand what the point of the film is at first, but the director eventually ties it all together. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a good laugh.
