The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

Any movie can make a guy laugh, but for a guy to think about that joke one hundred or more times and still laugh at it is an accomplishment (the joke is in the diner about the "Happy Waitress Special"). This has got to be one of the funniest films I've seen this year, it may even be better than The Hangover. Beer League received horrible reviews and an awful gross when in theaters for the brief run it had. While at the same time it doesn't deserve the bad reviews, its a movie that critics will hate so my reaction to the reviews isn't shocked.Beer League is a movie that has a message that is something like "Who cares about the critics? Lets make a balls out Comedy for middle age men who love softball, drinking, and friends." Which is why its funny. It has a combination of stupid jokes, racist jokes, and some funny gay humor, that maybe offensive, but its not meant to be taken personal. Nothing about this movie is supposed to be.Artie DeVanzo (Lange) is a 35 year old low life, still living with his mother, and playing a loser softball team that cant be taken serious. After a recent argument with the opposing softball team, they must win the championship or find another league to play in. Along the way they uncover obstacles like the team's laziness and intoxication the way through. The team includes an Italian, a sports fanatic, a crazed lunatic who has home troubles, and the Karate Kid himself. So the team's got potential...kind of.The whole humor stems from Artie Lange in this movie. He wrote, produced, and stars in the movie. Hes the best and has some killer one liners. Not being an Artie Lange fan and having this be the first thing I watched with him in it I had no idea what I was expecting. The whole thing maybe one slapstick induced, no point one liner after another, but the movie is full of slapstick induced, no point one liner after another that are hilarious. Which is why Beer League is in a league of it's own.Starring: Artie Lange, Ralph Macchio, Laurie Metcalf, and Anthony DeSando. Directed by: Frank Sebastiano

Lange is deadbeat loser who's only ray of sunshine in life is his softball team, at least until he hooks up with Buono. Macchio is his best friend and DeSando his arch enemy on and off the field. The movie is split rather evenly between softball action and the rest of the other shenanigans. I spent years playing in softball leagues like this, I've played on fields like their field (which I love), I've played with guys like the guys on Artie's team, although the language was a little better. I love Buono, she's the best thing in this movie, the only question you're asking is why she's hanging with a loser like Artie (who admittedly has some redeeming characteristics). I don't like the raunchiness, I think it hurts the movie, problem is with guys like Lange the raunchy part is so ingrained in the rest of the schtick that it's impossible to separate it out. Jimmy Palumbo does a great bit announcing as he plays, it's that sort of thing along with Buono that makes this a thumbs up rather than thumbs down. Parts of the movie are very rewatchable. And BTW, both Lange and Palumbo are real playahs.

One of the terrible because it's true facts about show business over the last few years was that many people expected Artie to die! His brutally frank tales often revolve around his gluttonous eating habits, severe depression and drug abuse. The man who could have easily become another entertainment fatality too soon has apparently cleaned up his act and finally gotten on the healthier track. Of course, his sense of what's funny will stay in the gutter where his quick with a witty and/or vile joke mind is destined to remain. (Please note the above comments were written before Artie's recent situation developed into public knowledge. I don't consider whatever actually happened to be my or anyone else's business unless Artie himself goes on the record about the truth. Art, we love you and want you to get better! You're a talented man and millions of us are thinking of the Lange family in these times. From a sincere fan.)"Beer League" is a kick in the pants comedy that lets Art shine, with food stains on his shirt, in his Jersey stomping grounds. These drink a little, swear a lot leagues do exist and his natural talent for baseball was something he had going for himself before tragedy and chemical dependency took hold during the midpoint of his life. The no longer teenage looking Ralph Macchio and Seymour Cassel help Art along in this both sensitive and totally insensitive story as he finds love and the hate inside both rising to the surface.Full of great tunes and guy humour, this star vehicle isn't for all tastes. It's primarily geared towards the audience he's won over on the radio and his stand up career. Great roles for Cara Buono as his lady and Laurie Metcalf as his saint of a mother might help keep the women who don't care for the overall raunchy tone watching.A little poem I wrote a while back in 2007:" Artie Lange's 40th Birthday "You've come a long way from hopes dockedFrom Jersey to Holeywood, ya rocked!Show business wasn't always your cup of teaGive a big middle finger to all things phony!Mad TV, we laughed deliriouslyNow satellite is taking you Siriusly!Into a wild and crazy new frontierLet your next forty years keep the roasts near!

I watched this movie and I have to say it was exactly what you expect. It doesn't try and make you think you are going to watch an academy award winning film, it makes you think that I'm bored i feel like laughing a lot so I'll check it out. Although the comedy in it is a bit raunchy it is hilarious. I don't kow how anyone dislikes this comedy it's not like you walked into this movie anticipating an American film institute classic. Great movie the story line leaves a bit to be expected but still a very funny movie. It's exactly what your expecting if you like movies that you can relate to you have to check it out. If you get the chance to rent do it and if you can pick it up for five dollars or so it's a great buy.
