3000 Miles to Graceland

It was an ingenious enough plan: rob the Riviera Casino's count room during an Elvis impersonator convention. But Thomas Murphy decided to keep all the money for himself and shot all his partners, including recently-freed ex-con Michael Zane. With $3.2 million at stake, the Marshals Service closing in, Michael must track down Murphy.

Very interesting film. Was caught on the premise when seeing the trailer but unsure as to what the outcome would be for the showing. As it turns out, it was a very good film.

Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.

There's one amazing shot in this movie - it's the five Elvii walking toward the casino to the tune of Crystal Method's "Vapor Trail." Everything before that is trying to come up with a reason for that shot. Everything after is to have something after, because, well, they needed something after. In the end, it simply isn't interesting who lives, who dies (which is practically everybody), and who gets money. Characters who aren't played by Kurt Russel and Kevin Cosner are all forgettable, and for the most part unbelievable. Did anybody tell Howie Long or Ice-T how bewildering their appearance at the end as talking (and shooting) puppets would be?Nothing before 'the walk' matters, nothing after 'the walk' matters. And I'd argue that all that money, blank ammunition and blood squibs was not worth the 17 seconds of 'the walk'. Certainly not two hours of sitting in the theater.

Let me start off by saying that Elvis Presley is my favourite solo artist ever. He may not have a knack for song writing and he is not a great guitar player like Eddie Van Halen, but he is still the best. 3000 Miles to Graceland is not the first Elvis movie not about Elvis, but it looked like it was about to be the best. After all, the desert landscape in Nevada is the perfect setting for the beginning of an action and adventure picture. And the film starts off with promise. Well, "promise" may be the wrong word. It seemed to be a fun, irresistible action picture. The movie is about Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner as die-hard Elvis fans who plan to rob a casino during an Elvis convention. The robbery is awesome with explosive action, flashy settings, and the song "Such A Night" playing. When one of their men gets killed, the others argue about their cuts of the loot. So Costner kills the men and takes all the money for himself. But Russell survives. He enlists the help of a single mother (Courtenay Cox) who he met earlier in the film to catch Costner. I've always had the hots for Cox, but she seems to be her prettiest right here. Her failed attempt at the Southern accent didn't even bother me. It is after this when the movie starts falling apart. One of the main reasons is how forgettable everything else is. Sure Costner plays a badass and we would like to see Russell get even, but the final showdown could not come soon enough. Sure there's a scene where Russell and Costner are in jail, Jon Lovitz plays a pawn-broker, but none of these work to the story's advantage. It doesn't move forward. But it could have been totally fun! Throw in a couple of more action scenes and don't make Russell the sole survivor. That would have made this a better film altogether. Do this, and get somebody else to direct it. The directing was good, with all the oblique angles and cinematography, but it seemed like the director knew the film was shallow and this was the candy to make up for it. When the ending does come along, there is a cool shootout, almost as good as the one at the beginning. But the scene before is dumb and not believable. This diminished the ending of the film to almost sucking. I did like the ending, but I didn't love it like I did the beginning. Elvis' most underrated song "Such A Night" is the most prominent one in the movie. The ending features a music video of Kurt Russell lip-syncing the song. Go on Youtube and watch it now. The movie itself? You can skip it.

3000 Miles To Graceland (2001)**Spoilers**Plot In A Paragraph: A gang of ex-cons led by Murphy (KC) and Michael (Kurt Russell) rob a casino dressed as Elvis, during Elvis convention week. KC plays Murphy as a cold bad ass, who has zero regard for human life. Almost everybody who dies in the movie is killed by Murphy. We see a lot of people murdered during the robbery (the only time people are killed by other members of the gang) and they are quickly forgotten about. Russell (who received top billing) shows he had not lost his ability to do a good Elvis impression, we know from the outset he is the good guy. During the robbery he dresses in a white jumpsuit as opposed to KC's black, and he is the only member of the gang not to kill someone, hitting them with the butt of his gun instead. As for the rest of the supporting cast Courtney Cox gives a career low performance, her accent is awful and her character unlikeable (like when she steals the loot herself, leaving her son with one of the thieves) Christian Slater is OK, as is David Arquette, Bookeem Woodbine however is the token black character, who is so cliché, he actually dies first!! It has several problems with it. A ludicrous opening involving robot scorpions, a ridiculously annoying child actor, time wasting subplots and a few plot holes. But I for one do find it fun to watch. Im not sure what it says about me if I find such acts of violence by despicable people fun, but hey ho. I think if they ditched the subplot involving Cox and her kid, the core audience this movie was aimed at, would have loved it. With a whopping 13 producers (Just like Get Carter) 3000 Miles was produced by Franchise Pictures who didn't seem to know what they wanted. So like with Get Carter and Driven, they started interfering. When the film finished shooting, the director, KC and Russell all disagreed about the way the film should feel. The studio let both stars edit their own versions which were then shown to test audiences. Russell's cut was more comedy oriented and focused on his character's relationship with Cox while KC's was more action oriented. It's unknown who's cut was released, it could be a mash up of both, as there is plenty of action, but also a lot of Russell and Cox!!The movie performed so badly at the domestic Box Office, it wasn't even released in theatres in the UK, going straight to DVD (The first KC movie to do that since God knows when.... Maybe something from 81-85) and that was not until after his next movie was already released.

Michael Zane (Kurt Russell) meets Cybil (Courteney Cox) and his thieving kid at a desolate motel. He sleeps with her after 5 1/2 years behind bars. Elvis fanatic Thomas Murphy (Kevin Costner), Hanson (Christian Slater), Gus (David Arquette) and Franklin (Bokeem Woodbine) come to pick him up for a job. They set off to rob the Riviera Casino as Elvis impersonators. The movie tries so hard to be an edgy crime drama. It starts from the beginning with the CG scorpion battle. It looks cheesy and bad. There is some shoot em up action but not done that well. Too much slow motion is used. Everything is done aggressively that none of it is that compelling. Demian Lichtenstein is simply not at the upper echelon of directors that this movie needs. The kid is so annoying. Some of the characters act stupidly. None of them are likable and there is no rooting interest. It's a slick crime drama but the style doesn't work.
