Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
To me, this movie is perfection.
Good story, Not enough for a whole film
a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
It's difficult to describe or explain 'Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter', because there's nothing quite like it. I'm not even sure how you would categorise this film. Officially it's a drama, but it's also a comedy/adventure and one of very few films that's bleak and depressing yet somehow amusing at the same time.'Kumiko' is a slow and subtle film that relies heavily on the title character. The mystery and intrigue surrounding her is probably the only thing that makes this otherwise dull film interesting. In fairness, it does for this reason make for quite fascinating viewing, though the viewer does require a lot of patience and much of the subtle humour requires attention to pick up on. 'Kumiko' is a strange film and certainly on the weirdest comedy dramas I've seen.
It's beautiful to look at, and it held my attention. Mostly because the story was at once realistic and absurd. I've read the other reviews here and am surprised other people found it funny, and, more so that it's hailed as great art. It's a metaphor? A fable? An allegory? A riff on Fargo and the American dream? I get the reference to "based on a true story"/Fargo concept. And I bought into it. Until she has the encounter with the Minnesota sheriff. I'm from that part of the world (Wisconsin). The woman would have been assessed and recognized as somebody mentally ill and treated as such. What's shown is pure fantasy, but it's the film maker's fantasy, not the character's. That's where the reality train jumped the shark for me. From that point on the movie just became poorly done, too much of a departure from what had preceded, which was dark, convincing, and compelling. So I guess I didn't see the same movie others saw. What I saw was a movie about a severely depressed woman who had a psychotic break from reality. There wasn't anything funny about it to me. But it interested me enough that I wanted to see the payoff, how it ended. I kind of had to, I had invested so much time in the story. But it wasn't worth it, and I felt cheated. If that's the point of the movie, it succeeded.
Very interesting film about an isolated and apparently autistic girl who sets off to find an obsessional 'treasure' she believes she has discovered from a fictional movie.Although currently rated the same as 'Fast and Furious' on IMDb, which must be someone's idea of a bad joke, this movie is a work of art.The film, although humorous and often heartwarming, is in essence a tragic depiction of the search for meaning and self-worth in an individual who is alienated from the world and ultimately alone. The cinematography is at times hauntingly beautiful and the direction is superb.Well worth seeing.
Kumiko is a film about a Japanese girl who hasn't conformed to the norms of the Japanese traditions. By doing this she has been isolated and shamed, so she decides to head to America to find "The Treasure", using the movie "Fargo" as a map. The problem with Kumiko is not the story itself, but just how random her actions are. At times you feel detached from the movie, given this is a movie about detachment and depravity, but the story seems to go a little bit too off track for my liking.Kumiko, however, is a good film to watch. It's immensely somber and achieves the atmosphere well. One other thing I will mention, however, is the portrayal of the main character, Kumiko; it is absolutely fantastic.
