Lack of good storyline.
Good , But It Is Overrated By Some
Don't listen to the negative reviews
a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
There is 2 reasons why i got this movie, no actually there is 3... The first one was it had Jessica Biel, which i find gorgeous and likable in much the stuff she is in. Second was it was very cheap, only 3$ at the video store for a buy. Third one is the most important, i was really expecting a war theme movie about a group of soldier being ambushed in Irak and having to survive... Thats actually the premise of the movie if you read the back of the box art....??? But the movie is something completely different. There is an ambush yeah, and they do have to survive, but for 5-10 minutes at best... Thats one of the rare action sequence of the movie and all the rest is a drama about how they have to readjust to there previous lives...Now i will give that to the writers and people involved, the story is not bad, and for the kind of person that do enjoy these types of movies, I'm sure this one is a good one. Thats why I'm giving it a 6, being honest. But me... i was expecting an action movie, by everything the movie had to offer from cover art, to the synopsis, and the actor playing in it. Yeah the fact of having 50 cent in a drama is very strange for me. Samuel L and Jessica Biel also have there share of action movies...In any case, i was PERSONALLY bored for the best part of the movie, despite a good try by the actors and a script that i mentioned, is pretty good for its category. Thanksfully the movie was not too long, unlike The Hurt Locker where i checked like 5 times when it was gonna end... so well. But nop, these are not my type of movies...
Sorry folks. Iraq was not Vietnam. A jungle in Southeast Asia is very different from an open desert in the middle east. That's not to belittle what our soldiers went through, but I think Vietnam was a bit more unpredictable and freaky, given the terrain. We have deserts in America. We don't have jungles. Why not include at least one veteran who adjusts well to life back home? I'm sure there are plenty. It would provide balance.Other than the one substantial event at the end of their tour, was the rest of their experience over there so terrible? Some reviewers have said that this is not an anti-war movie, but I think it is. You hear so many characters questioning our motives, but not many, if any, effectively defending them. All the characters do is feel sorry for themselves. It gets tiresome. Why didn't the Director and Writer notice this? Where's the gratitude? For their health, their lovely town and families, and their employment?Bush laid out at least 17 concrete reasons to go in there, and it all fit the concept of the War on Terror, with or without WMDs. What character says that? Why the hell did you volunteer, if you didn't believe in the cause? Why do a movie, unless you can offer something unique? A different take on things, a different performance, a different style? Melodramatic music, flashbacks, heaviness, mediocre acting. It's all been done before. Stay away from this one.
Hollywood almost got it right this time. Along with The War Tapes and Combat Diary: The Marines of L Co. I could hear my words, my friends' words, and those of their loved ones coming from the actors' and actresses' mouths. The way the characters have trouble fitting back in and the relief they show when meeting someone from their unit is very true to life. I really liked how Mrs. Marsh gave it right back to her husband about how nerve-racking it is to be pining for a spouse's return. Also, how LTC Marsh defends his son's right to free speech, then grounds him and tells him he doesn't have to read a newspaper since he's been to Iraq. I've been telling people for years how the majority of journalists hate America and the troops, and opt to print partial truths and outright lies instead of telling a true story. I'm relieved to see that even Hollywood acknowledges it now. There are some glaring errors, (fully automatic M16s, poor convoy route choice, berets that look like soufflés, missing unit patches and crests, all of the vets came back screwed up, sparse overacting or not quite "nailing it", etc.) but it hits some rather intricate details perfectly (correct prescription names and symptoms, perfect situations that cause frustration, overall difficulty fitting back in, etc.) I really enjoyed this movie, bought it, and have watched it again. Well done.
As I read the reviews, I can't help but think that the people who trash this movie are ardent Bush/War fans, for their criticism seems specious. It's far from being the best movie I've ever seen, or the best acting. What it is is a collection of accounts of how peoples' lives have been shattered by a political excursion that had no justification... and still doesn't. It shows the wasted lives and even defends the cause, which I thought made it more than impartial. Jackson's character defends the invasion as does Presley's. But all are overwhelmed by it and the tragic consequences of the conflict. The plot makes sense. The acting is fair, not terrible. The subject matter is handled evenly, presenting neither a pro war or con position, which is very hard to do. But for those who think that we must rally around the flag at all costs, this film is clearly an anathema. This invasion was started with lies and many people believe that we need to continue to lie to "Support the Troops." The best way to support the troops is to tell the truth, as this movie tries to do and to finally bring them home... not in coffins.
