Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
How sad is this?
The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
Since the film is based on a true story, you already know what the outcome will be from the starting point, so it leaves room for very little surprises. Nevertheless, the film is a wonderful feel-good movie. James Corden is perfectly cast as Paul Potts. The love story is beautiful and the characters are very likable. A delightful comedy, actually.
Based on true life. Specifically the life of Paul Potts, the first-ever winner of the talent show Britain's Got Talent. A mobile phone salesman by profession and an opera singer by hobby, he managed to struggle through life's hardships to woo an entire generation of TV watchers. It's good stuff, though I'm not sure it's enough for a whole feature film. The film has changed a few details, for example the profession of Paul's dad from a bus driver to a factory worker and the fact that in real life Paul had siblings, but I feel that those can be justified as it makes the story more streamlined and coherent. Perhaps the factory worker storyline is a bit heavy handed, theme-wise, but then the whole movie isn't exactly subtle. And I do appreciate the story. It's told very fairytale-ish, with clear underdogs, clear eventual winners, with good and honest people eventually getting their just reward, love triumphing and all that. And yet it all revolves around a real-life talent show. Something we've all watched every now and then. And as I was watching this movie, I couldn't help constantly wondering about just how much of this movie was a publicity stunt. Apparently most of it is at least based on true events. Which is something. But almost every life can be turned into wonderment if you run it through Disney Princess Magic filter. And that's what this feels like. It feels like pandering, it feels false. If you're honestly really into Britain's Got Talent, and Paul Potts specifically, you'll probably enjoy this film just fine. For the rest of you, bring toothpaste.
This movie came and went so fast, partly I suspect because we've all had our fill of reality TV, on TV! At least we seem to wish to avoid it at the movies. In fact this film is not about reality TV, it's a much bigger and more engaging piece, a real romance, talent and ambition, bullying, and the insidious way people support it, depending upon whose the bully. It's also about drive, hard knocks, mean spiritedness and redemptive love. Excellent performances from the two leads.. Paul Potts life really was leading up to X Afactor before X Factor ever existed...there was always going to be a 'One a Chance'. Highly recommended.
Other reviews for this movie (from "professional" reviewers) all point out how shallow this movie is when it comes to showing the feelings Paul is having at the various things that happen to him throughout his life. This may very well be the case. But this movie was not made to be a Doctoral Thesis on the effects of bullying. Rather, it was made to show how, once a young man becomes a coward in his youth, it is almost impossible to overcome later in life. The scene in the alley (when the chick comes to his rescue with the guitar) shows how, as an adult, Paul could only get the barest semblance of rage at his life-long tormentor, even though he had all the reason in the world to go ballistic. After losing his voice, he was unwilling to take a chance at being ridiculed by an audience, so he almost didn't even fill-in the form for Britain's Got Talent. He almost didn't go on stage (several times). There must be a lot of kids getting bullied in England for their love of opera. Just this year, there was another case -- Lucy Kay -- who went through the same torture. She finished second, and has been signed by Simon Cowell personally for one of his labels.Yes, this movie will not win an Oscar -- or even play in any American theaters -- but you need to see it. If you bullied fellow school mates when you were young, you might want to go find those now-grown-up kids and apologize. If you were bullied, this movie will inspire you.
