Reviews
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
The acting in this movie is really good.
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
Mark and Sarah survived the mayhem from the first movie only to have Sarah on trial for a murder committed by a dismembered hand. To find the proof that will clear her, the pair travel through time and space to dimensions full of historical, movie, and book characters. With guest appearances by Bruce Campbell and David Carradine, how can you go wrong? Especially with such intense homages to "Dawn of the Dead", "The Haunting" and more? If any complaint can be lodged with this film, it is that it is complete nonsense. The logic is even more goofy than the last film (which was pretty bad), the continuity is non-existent, and it does not really follow the first film except in the most vague way... but if you do not mind completely malarkey, this movie is fun.
Like most sequels, Waxwork II is lamer than the first, which is a pity because I liked its predecessor. Their director/writer Anthony Hickox pretty much took what was fun about the first - the entering into different horror realms - and ran amok with it. The leads travel through time (and I guess realities) - much like Sliders - while looking for something or other. Slowly at first, but eventually they wind up barreling through realities as though Hickox had too many references that he wanted to fit into the movie but didn't have enough time to. Some are fun - one S&M one is a tad disturbing - but they've since lost their original charm. Horror-comedy stalwart, Bruce Campbell, does the same overacting schtick from his Evil Dead movies but his all-too-short cameo was the highlight of the movie for me.
Will the sequel be as interesting as the first film? Writer/director Anthony Hickox brings us another homage to movie monsters. Zach Galligan returns as Mark, who survived the first film, along with a new Sarah (Monika Schnarre), but it is the appearances of Drew Barrymore and Bruce Campbell that peaks my interest.Viewers of the first film know that a zombie hand survived along with Mark and Sarah. The hand kills Sarah's step-father and she and Mark have to travel through time portals to find evidence to clear her. This film has blood and gore, but it is more of a spoof than a horror film. They end up first with Dr. Frankenstein and his monster. As they escape, they get separated and Sarah is playing Ripley fighting Aliens, while Mark is with some ghost hunters. They rejoin each other and end up in the Middle ages. All sorts of interesting characters come into the picture, including Jack the Ripper, zombies, Hitchcock, Nosferatu, and even Godzilla. The fascinating thing about the film is trying to identify all the films it spoofs. It is interesting fun.
this sequel is certainly an improvement rover the original.this one, like the original,is obviously played for laughs.but that's pretty much the only similarity.in this one,the laughs acre actually funny, more often than not.the whole thing is really a spoof of other movies, and works quite well.Bruce Campbell(the Evil Dead Trilogy)has a pretty funny extended cameo which parodies his Evil dead movies and also the 1960's classic The Haunting. The Alien series also gets the treatment here.there are many others as well.the acting is still hammy, and the dialogue is still bad,but this movie has a better story and is more clever.it's not a masterpiece, but there are some good moments.for me,Waxwork II:Lost in Time is a 5.5/10
