Absolutely Brilliant!

It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.

This is about a giant rock formation that bursts from the earth somewhere near China. The US sends a team to investigate, while the Chinese send a few divisions of troops, and a US soldier goes insane. The US team consists of a scientist who's main investigative strategy seems to be pointing out how smart he is and how dumb everyone else is, which is ironic because if you actually pay attention, it turns out he's wrong in the end. Then there's the hard nosed government agent who does everything she can to keep the scientist from doing his job, based on the fact that he made a bad joke and she's mad at him. And then the previously mentioned insane soldier. So, we're in good hands here.The big problem with the movie is that it sets up a good premise: What is this thing? And then never answers its own question. Your guess is as good as the writer's. Very unsatisfying. A lot of time wasted with subplots that should have been spent coming up with an interesting explanation for the alien object. I felt like they expected me to use my experience with other sci-fi films and just assume that these aliens were pretty much the same. Or not...or, well, just look at all the money we spent on CGI - pretty cool eh?The action moves along okay, the acting isn't bad, the characters are all somewhat annoying, and the CGI is actually pretty good. Basically it's the writing that sunk this thing.

Why are most of the Sci-Fi Channel's 'original' films grades B? Can't they for once make something good? It seems that they spend all the production money on CGI effects. I can imagine what the shooting script must have looked like for this film. The first ten opening pages would show references to CGI effects, then a few lines of dialogue from some characters, then a few more pages devoted to CGI then a few more lines of dialogue.etc. Is this what science fiction films are coming to? They are going to look as if two 14 year olds in their parent's attic wrote them? This was another one of those lame films the Sci Fi channel expect sci fi fans to mindlessly eat up. That gives sci fi fans a bad name. Wake up SCI-FI Channel!!! You want CGI? Go see Day After Tomorrow.

While not bad Epoch could have been much better. With a higher budget this could have easily been along side such films as Mission To Mars, but with the limitations this movie had, Matt Codd and crew did a good job. The script is decent overall with some bits of cool dialouge and a few cool scenes. David Keith gives a good performance as Mason Rand but the two standouts from my perspective were Brian Thompson and James Hong. Thompson was very good as the god fearing Captain Tower and James Hong was excellent (as usual) as the Chinese ambassador. Other than those three the acting remains good all across the board. The directing was slick for the most part and the movie cruised along fairly quickly. All in all Epoch is an excellent straight-to-video film that could have easily been a sleeper summer hit, if only the budget was larger.

"Epoch" has a pretty good premise, but oh my God does the execution blow chunks. I don't like to use the word often, but this movie is just retarded. The screenplay, the acting, the character motivations -- God. It's like a bunch of kids wrote this movie, giving the characters all childish qualities. The idiot Chinese Government, who SHOOTS A MISSILE at the big black rock thingy, and THEN blames the U.S. Government for their jets getting destroyed! And guess what? Later, the brilliant Chinese sends a division of soldiers to invade a foreign country because that country wasn't "big enough" to have a say about who comes into their country!What a retarded movie. I swear, I've never used that word to describe any film, but "Epoch" really takes the cake.
