Reviews
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Blistering performances.
I didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
She Creature is a period piece, set around the turn of the century in Ireland. A sideshow couple somehow steal a mermaid and get it onto a ship heading for America. They plan to make money off of it, but things go wrong. The best thing about this movie was how well Carla Guigino was filmed. They made her look great in every scene. The mermaid was kind of cool looking in her antique tank, and there was a pretty nice atmosphere of menace built up.I didn't really like how it resolved. The mermaid started eating the crew, and eventually turned into a spiky creature that killed everyone except the pregnant Carla. She brought the ship to some hidden land where the rest of the mermaids were waiting to eat the remaining bodies. There were some memorable visuals, and the fact that the title suggests there are other installments gives it an air of mystery, but I think that is really all there is to it. Fun to watch, but not much payoff.
I got this made-for-cable "Creature Feature" as a NetFlix rental. I'm off to the stores to look for a copy to buy for the archive.I went into it expecting mediocrity in a TV movie, and got brilliant directing and camera work, a stunning score, beautiful period costuming, and a cast of "never heard of 'em" actors and actresses I fell in love with. Most modern horror movies fail on so many levels. This one wins on them all. First of all it's a good story. It's well presented with the proper mood. It's well acted. The sets and costumes are believable. It's actually SCARY in places, and it progresses to a well thought-out conclusion (although I thought the final creature transformation from the mermaid to...whatever that was...was a little off), and that failure cost this movie a star in my rating....can't give ten, only nine.More than that would be a spoiler, but please, don't deprive yourself. I don't hand "nines" out readily. Go rent or buy She Creature. You'll be glad you did. Not for the kiddies.
Like others here, I saw this not expecting much. A cheesy cover, no budget, a so so title bad effects -- but brother was I WRONG! This is a magical wonderful movie with a style like Polanski and Tim Burton too! Sexy and also really well plotted. I was shocked! Rufus Sewell (The Illusionist) and Carla Gugino (everything she's in!) are so underrated and sooooo good here! Rya Kihlstedt makes a great mermaid. Camera is efficient at all times and sense of unease well sustained. Subject is a bit adult with lesbian sexual tones throughout (executed in a very thoughtful manner) but kids could almost watch this for old fashioned mystery horror.WATCH IT WITHOUT PREJUDICE.8 stars
First of all the tail is all wrong. The stories I heard the tail looks nothing like that. Plus, I never heard of Sirens diving into the sea and becoming Mermids. That's just idiotic. Next, what the hell is a Lair? Other then something bad guy uses in hide in. I liked the topless angel, that was the only thing they got right. But I am not convinced that Mermaids (if they exist) are out to kill Sailors, that's the Siren game not mermaids. If you want to see a better movie about mermaids that get the tail right and don't make them into killer monsters, then check out MERMAIDS, and SPLASH. I give SHE-CREATURE...4 STARS for creature effects alone.
