The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
Farrah Fawcett, Harvey Keitel, and (today 101 year old) Kirk Douglas together? If nothing else, the casting makes it worth the brief runtime of this dark, bizarre campfest. People freaking out about 63-year-old Douglas' naked butt? You'd better hope you look that good when you get there...which is part of the whole point of this flick. Douglas is holding it together, basically a superman for his age...but it doesn't matter. Age is winning. He's failing. And a fucking giant robot wants his gal. There's pathos here, real pathos under all the shitty acting, and the only disappointment, for me, was that Elmer Bernstein, the great, underrated Elmer, didn't step up and add something to the score. And Keitel's dubbed dialog is weird...but wow, that young Keitel sure does look compelling as hell. There are about a million worse ways to spend 1.5 hours.
I stumbled upon this movie on NetFlix. I like outer space adventures and thought with Kirk Douglas and Harvey Cartel this would be a good one. I was wrong. After the first ten minutes I decided to just fast forward to the scenes with Farrah Fawcet in a negligee, which there was an abundance of.
not a masterpiece, quite flawed, yet worth seeing once ... (or maybe twice, if you're a pervert robot digging other guys GFs ...) ;-)was seeing this movie's tag on YouTube for a few days but since i never was a big Farrah Fawcett fan just thought this must be a cheesy scifi and thus left it alone ...clicked on the tag last night at last and most of the scenes at the start look really well done so just decided to sit and move on ... and it was a good decision because although it is a little bit too flawed, cheesy even, in some areas, it's been made rather well overall ... i liked the sets in particular ...of course, the movie Alien's influence (as well as other scifi movies) is quite evident here but i dare say James Cameron did like certain items in this movie (aside from some sexy tits and limbs of course!) and then he came up with the Terminator ... :-)wanted to give it 7/10 but decided 5/10 is more suited ...good quality HD 720 copy here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gk5tLK22f70
This is one of my all time favorite sci-fi films. It has a realistic depiction of future and a thought provoking story. I have read Roger Eberts review which is a total embarrassment and seemed to be written by a 10 year old boy rather than a famed critic. He criticizes the film for being unrealistic, i.e. the gravity being almost the same on Earth.. Come on! Almost every major film from Star Wars to Alien depicts gravity even in spaceships. This film takes place in a moon of Saturn which has similar size to earth, so naturally gravity is close to the one on earth. Inhabitants wear oxygen helmets when outside the station, they pass through decontamination chambers and all other details are very finely handled. This is no cartoon fantasy with lightsabers and wampa-dampa monsters. This is serious stuff which even inspired some future films like The Terminator and The Matrix. OK, the film may not offer too much action and fun but it has a clever script. I liked how the chess game scene standed as a metaphor of the machine vs man battle and forecasted the films ending by adam making a sacrificial move to win the game. The only shortcomings of the film may be some poor special effects such as the landing of the spacecraft on the moons surface and some very obvious miniatures. May be with a higher budget this could have been turned into an all time classic. I would be pleased also to see an extended version. All in all this is a great film which never received the praise it deserves.
