It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.

It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.

This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama

I rarely walk out of films but I walked out of this one. It gets off to a great start. It's set in the Canary Islands, one of the most beautiful places in the world and the cast is just as beautiful. One of France's top stars heads the stellar cast and the story is intriguing and immediately gripped me. But, alas, about 45 minutes into the film the most disgusting scene occurred in a cab with Ma Mere, the Mother, her hunky teenage son and Mother's best girlfriend. The son asks the girlfriend for a kiss and she assures him that the only place she will kiss him is on his ass and then makes a comment about how poopy his butt is. Then, as if that isn't enough, she proceeds to demand he bend over and drop his pants so she can insert her finger up his ass in order for her and Ma Mere to sniff it. This is when I walked, telling my film bud he was on his own and true to form the poor guy sat through the rest of this sordid mess until the equally disgusting finish. How one of France's most beautiful and talented actresses got talked into this sewer is beyond me but the poor girl must have just been dumped by her lover and been in an awful state of depression to even consider being involved in a loathsome project such as this.

This movie stole 2 hours of my life and I want them back! I kept watching, hoping against hope, that something would happen in the film to redeem itself, but alas, it was not to be. Watching this movie is the cinematic equivalent of a root canal. And for a movie so full of sex, this is about the least erotic thing I can imagine. While Isabelle Huppert is an undeniably talented and beautiful actress, I can not comprehend what would possess her to star in a film like this. This movie is full of unpleasant people doing unpleasant things, for no discernible reason other than to annoy the viewer. None of the characters are remotely realistic, and their actions and motivations make no sense. In a real world, Isabelle Huppert's character would have been imprisoned and/or institutionalized. The basic story is this: boy goes to live with his parents, dad dies, son pees all over his dad's stuff and masturbates, mom sniffs her son's butt, mom decides to introduce son to a world of sexual deviance and perversion (including participating in group sex with him), mom decides she should leave before the two of them actually have sex (but she conveniently leaves a whore behind for son to fall in love with), mom continues her career as a prostitute, son and whore whip the local restaurateur and cry, mom comes home to cause more trouble, and then mom dies and son masturbates at her coffin. There, I just saved you two hours and quite a few brain cells.

As someone who has watched 1000's of films and actually likes foreign films, this was one of the most whacked-out movies I have ever watched. I fully appreciate that the subject matter is unconventional, and that people who get into such weird mental places do not have pedestrial social behavior. Also, most French films tend to take on unusualy subject manner and are much more direct in approach than US films when it comes to sex and sexuality. However, I feel like I was being thrown against a wall with one morally disgusting scene after another. I suppose it doesn't help when you instantly hate the main character, wonder if any of the adults act like adults (much less who isn't sexually overcharged), wonder why none of the teens have any common sense, and it just keeps going. You gain sympathy for certain characters and you realize the reason none of the adults act like adults is because...well..they have real problems. I will say it is beautifully shot and the direction just adds to the intensity, but thats about I can come up with in terms of redeeming qualities in what is one big mess!

Yet another artsy-fartsy French production, from an unfilmable source: I own the original novel, though I haven't checked it out yet - but I can gather as much from what I've read of author Georges Bataille's work! Despite writer/director Honore''s good intentions to never display sex gratuitously but rather as a means of further developing the plot (as explained in the accompanying interview), the film comes off as both pretentious and pointless - while the updating and change of setting don't work as much as he thinks they do! Most of the characters are repellent and, therefore, one is not easily drawn towards their plight: in fact, the two young women leads Isabelle Huppert and Louis Garrel - both seriously boring! - get involved with (and, particularly, gorgeous Emma De Caunes in a difficult role) are the ones who come off best, no pun intended...
