The Age of Commercialism
A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
Blistering performances.
The movie really just wants to entertain people.
A suspense horror film set in a small coastal town where, after a series of gory murders committed by mobs of townspeople against visiting tourists, the corpses begin to come back to life.Officially, the script was written by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett; O'Bannon later disowned the film, claiming that Shusett had written the script by himself but needed O'Bannon's name on the project to promote it being from the creators of "Alien". (Shusett and O'Bannon co-wrote "Alien", but the latter was the bigger name. Even today, Shusett is not well known, despite producing such science fiction hits as "Total Recall" and "Minority Report").The most noted horror name here is Robert Englund, who appears as Harry. At this point Englund had appeared in "Eaten Alive" but not yet "Nightmare on Elm Street", so he is given relatively little screen time and few lines to speak. In retrospect, I am sure the creators wish they had featured him more. But stealing the show was Jack Albertson, who portrayed William G. Dobbs as no one else could (as then passed away the same year). Although the film has a solid plot and good gore, the Dobbs character is what makes this a cut above the average film.Definitely a film that should be seen by those who have not yet had the pleasure...
Nicely plotted horror-mystery that puts its own entertaining spin on the zombie genre. In the friendly coastal town of Potter's Bluff, the locals will treat you to their own brutal brand of hospitality. This involves violent murder, but don't think you'll stay dead for long. Who could be responsible for these weird goings on, and could all of it be the result of witchcraft or voodoo? Horror fans will have fun finding out, and even if they figure it out, they can still delight in all of the elements on display. Official screenplay credit goes to Ronald Shusett and Dan O'Bannon, the men behind "Alien", and Gary A. Sherman, making his first stateside horror flick since the excellent 1972 shocker "Raw Meat", guides it all with a steady hand. The colour palette here is largely muted, and even when things get gory, there's not the usual burst of bright red to which one might be accustomed. In fact, "Dead & Buried" is a very solid mixture of atmosphere with gore. This viewer is partial to any horror film set in a sleepy seaside town (John Carpenter's "The Fog" being another prime example), and the filmmakers take full advantage of the setting. The lighting, by Steven Poster, and camera work, by John Koester, are very impressive. Joe Renzetti's music is excellent, especially the haunting piano-driven main theme. Stan Winston is the man behind the superb makeup effects; although there are some sub par effects in some scenes that were added on, these were not his work. There are some absolutely brilliant gags to be enjoyed here - one involves a needle to an eyeball (ouch!), and another, involving a charred body, creates an all too effective jump. A top notch cast is a treat to watch. James Farentino is our determined policeman hero; his histrionics at the end are a little much, but otherwise he's fine. Pretty Melody Anderson of "Flash Gordon" fame co-stars as his young wife, and we also get to see a pre-Freddy Robert Englund, Barry Corbin, Michael Pataki, Christopher Allport, luscious Lisa Blount, Bill Quinn, Macon McCalman, and Glenn Morshower. Stealing the show is the wonderful Jack Albertson, in his final feature film appearance, as flamboyant mortician / coroner G. William Dobbs, a man who truly knows how to make an entrance. His performance is just delicious and he has some highly amusing dialogue to boot. The screenplay may not hold up to a lot of scrutiny, but hopefully while this film is playing out, that won't matter too much. There's a real corker of an opening, and the final revelation is a good one, including a memorable closing line and image. Originally intended as more of a dark comedy, "Dead & Buried" works just fine as a real horror flick and is entertaining stuff worth seeking out for the uninitiated. Seven out of 10.
I gave this movie a 8/10 because compared to horror movies of the same time era this movie is amazing. It has the feel of something that might have been directed by John Carpenter at that time. It won't provide huge scares by todays standards, but it does a brilliant job of establishing an eerie atmosphere and suspense, which in my opinion does wonders in adding to the enjoyability of any movie. I think had this movie been directed by a bigger name director or perhaps stared someone more well known it would have enjoyed a much larger fan base, as it stands it seems to fly under the radar of most horror lists come Halloween time which is too bad because it really is well written and very enjoyable little movie.
Horror story full of tension, thrills , chills and restless terror. The writers of alien, Ronald Shusett and Dan O'Bannon , bring a new bizarre terror to earth . Suspense/horror film set in a small coastal town in Rhode Island where, after a series of gory murders committed by mobs of townspeople against visiting tourists, the corpses begin to come back to life . Bouts of insanity in the populace , realising a plague of murderous madness that are leading several grisly killings . In the little town some people begins to kill and rioting, and things really start going to hell with this sudden death-wave . Fortunately, the coastal small New England town has a magnificent mortician named William G. Dobbs (Jack Albertson) , who is glad to take care of these deaths which is good for his business . The puzzling seems to be resolved at the creepy final packed with twists and turns .This one is of the highest earning horror movies of the 80s and contains a good cast as James Farentino , Melody Anderson and special mention to Jack Albertson as the mysterious undertaker . Furthermore , early apparition of the future terror icon as Robert Englund and film debut for Lisa Blount . It's a solid movie , a terror story plenty of suspense and intrigue in which the victims seem to be coming back to life. Film itself takes place from point of sight the sheriff and the mortician . The living dead appearance is the high point of the movie , they deliver the goods plenty of screams, shocks and tension . The horror moments are compactly made and fast moving . It packs tension, shocks, thrills, chills and lots of gore and blood . There's plenty of moments of gore and a number of scenes that are quite horrifying , resulting to be definitely the spotlight of the film the surprising ending . This gory chiller is well made by Gary A. Sherman . Gary is an expert on action genre as proved in ¨Wanted : dead or alive¨ , ¨Vice squad¨ and terror as ¨Death line¨ , ¨Poltergeister III¨ , and ¨Dead and buried¨ , this one is his best film . Rating : 6,5 , good horror movie .
