Excellent adaptation.
In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
I kept this quiet for a while. But I feel there are way too many serious gritty angry films that are plaguing the auditoriums in many big theaters. What happened to the fantasy? The Wisdom? The Light nature of films that happened back in the day? Before the gritty realism drama movies came along, we had movies like Man of The House. Critically panned and a flop at the box office, it is highly underrated. This is a good example of movies with a light heart before all these dang furious movies came out in the 10's. Plot? Texas Ranger Roland Sharp tries to protect Rebellious Teenage Cheerleaders at a University after they witness the murder of a man. At first they don't get along and Sharp sets rules in the house they live in. But soon enough they find themselves liking this person. But are they really safe with him? When I was first watching it, I was like "Well, These cheerleaders are going to be super dumb." They kind of made them dumb in the beginning! But they actually turned out to be smart realistic teenage cheerleaders. That made me surprised. I really enjoyed the company of these five cheerleaders and they made me laugh.Tommy Lee Jones is also awesome in this movie too! He has some really funny stuff to do in the movie including a scene with handcuffs! I actually do like this film a lot because not only is it smart in most cases, but it has a really good script, a great cast and some really funny scenes! Only complaint I have though is that it is a bit bloody in some places even though it's a PG-13. But this film was really well made! I wish more films were like this now. But I guess we will have to settle with our humorous superhero films for now.89/100 B+
I cannot believe all of the negativity on this board about this film. Is it perfect? Not at all (There is a tremendous distance between Austin Tx, and Brownsville, Tx (The Mexican Border), and it takes 5 & 1/2 hours to get there), and the point is overlooked in the film. That said, two of the keys to any film, are characters you like (Or don't like in certain cases), and did these characters grow during the film and the answer in both cases is yes. Spoilers: As much as Roland Sharp (Tommy Lee Jones), did for the girls (Saving them when there was a bomb attached to the van, and saving Anne (Christina Millan) and Teresa (Paula Garces) from guys trying to hit upon them it a nasty way in a bar), and introducing them to Percy Stevens (Cedric The Entertainer (Who is outstanding in this film), who is able to improve their dancing. However, the girls did far more for him. But how they are able to fix him up so he can go on a date with Prof. Molly McCarthy (Anne Archer). He did not even realize he should give her flowers (Although he did get it right by cooking and playing and dancing to Willie Nelson's "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain." (Molly acknowledged how she liked Willie Nelson)). Four of the girls were the ones who rescued his daughter from being kidnapped by Ranger Holt (Shea Whigham). Note: After Holt forced himself to be handcuffed and the keys thrown away, it was Teresa who freed him. At the end, his daughter decided to attend The University of Texas (Austin), instead of going away as she planned, and he was able to marry Molly, so he gained quite a bit, gaining a wife and keeping his daughter close to him. I really loved this film. Easy 10/10 Stars.
Because that's what it lacks... Remember all those annoying characters in Friday the 13-th you were happy to see dismembered in all the ways possible? Well they've come back with a vengeance in this movie at it's nothing worse than seeing annoying stereotypical cheerleaders being them-selves and being proud about it without any kind of payoff. If you absolutely have to watch this movie I would recommend putting on Friday the 13-th or Halloween just right after and imagine all those dumb faces on the victims - it works wonders...This movie fails as a comedy in too many departments to even try to mention them all and Tommy Lee Jones is the only redeemable factor in it, but even he can't do much with such a horrible script and supporting actors.NOT RECOMMENDED.
Tommy Lee Jones is well cast and a positive presence in every movie, and all but one of the five cheerleaders are attractive, but MOTH is far too formulaic and predictable to be fulfilling viewing. Perhaps I'm too jaded, having seen far too many formula comedies, so maybe this is quite an entertaining film for 15 year-olds, and I don't mean this in a nasty way. Some of the gags and situations are so foreseeable that you can sniff them out a mile ahead.Nevertheless, a pleasant enough action comedy which would have been better without its obligatory DULL crime plot. Why does nearly every single movie have to have a cops-and-robbers (sub-)plot? So many of these writers are too lazy to write an all-out comedy, so they waste everyone's time with pointless crime stuff. The one cheerleader I didn't like was Vanessa Farlito, "Butterfly" in "Death Proof". What a damn mug! SPOILER coming up: Oh yeah, and the bad gay just happens to be an FBI agent... Yawn...
