Wonderful character development!
Simply A Masterpiece
Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Altar started very well it had a very bleak dark look to it at first thinking this will be good. It was not a bad film it kept me interested the whole time. But the ending was a bit out there and I think it should have kept it a little to the way it started. Not a bad idea but could have been better. The acting was average the location was very good made you believe ghosts wee in the walls. It did offer some cool scares at times but not enough I feel. A pretty decent score helped at times. Pretty good cinematography also gave it a good look.I would tell people to see this as it was entertaining at times. Check it out when you have time.
The first thing I'd have to say about The Haunting of Radcliffe House (Altar) is that it's too long, the lesser elements of this TV film failed to hold my attention, I got a bit bored with it at times. The positives, who doesn't love a ghost story, it's been done a hundred times before, but it's still watchable, it still has a few jumps, and the story itself is an interesting one. Antonia Clarke, playing daughter Penny, was easily the best performer throughout, she was great. The bad bits, it's been done before, you could spend ages picking out the film references, there are too many to list, The Skeleton Key is heavily referenced. The acting is generally a little amateur, I'm a fan of Olivia Williams, but she isn't great here, maybe it's the clunky direction, but none of them seem well serviced, Antonia Clarke somehow manages to add something. I think they tried to be over creative, some of the 'arty' scenes were way off.A good plod. 6/10
There is no movie like Altar some might say, but I don't entirely agree with them. First of all let me start with the best stuff that the movie has to offer. There is a good plot that ties everything together, thematic soundtracks, and a good cast. However I was slightly disappointed that at the start of the story things didn't really kick off like they should have. I just thought that the beginning of the story could have been a little more interesting, but other than that it was good. Maybe sometimes it's better to develop the story first and some of the characters or their environment for that matter before actually getting into the action of it all. The actions scenes were the very best so I have no complaints about this. There are only a couple more problems that I have with the film Altar that prevented me and other viewers from enjoying it as much as I could have I admit. The first one is the fact that a little too much is revealed about the house too soon in my opinion. On the other side of the coin I like how the filmmaker's foreshadow the story by using one of the main characters Meg Hamilton, who restores historic houses does this by saying, "I have a feeling this house is full of surprises."
Altar is a symbol of sacrifice oftentimes for all the wrong reasons. And as viewers we all know just how wrong those things can go in a horror movie like Altar. Unfortunately as much as I loved the movie I actually have some bad things to say about it. First of it's just not scary enough in parts. It makes up for this though by being more frightful in other scenes in the movie. The movie startled me though with its clever music that sent shivers up my spine. I also liked the close-ups they used showing the ghost running nearer and nearer. What I love more than anything though is the mood that was created of an isolated mansion that destroys people's lives. There was an efficient amount of blood used which is great because I don't like very bloody movies myself. Even in a horror movie too much of anything is never good which is the reason why Altar succeeded. They were always balanced especially in cinematic violence.
