Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Its cold atmosphere, the brutal last part. the freshness of performances. a case. discovered as a slowly show ended with a terrible gesture who, at first sigh, has not explanations or motifs but, after a time, small details recreates the meaning of the attitude of young Tony. behind the story, the performances are the leading reason for see Savage Grace. and, sure, the precise portrait of a family story. eccentric, slice of magazine gossip but useful for the fascination dose. a film about solitude. and love. and games. and the impecable art of Julianne Moore and Eddy Redmayne.
I have just watched this film and found it to be near unwatchable; all the more reason perhaps to attempt to watch it again. Some lovely cinematography and solid scripting,.even the good acting failed to make any impact on me. Perhaps because those depicted were such empty people, eeking out a meagre existence despite their monetary wealth, I found it difficult to involve myself in the film. The supposedly shocking scenes were not so, partly because it's what we've come to expect from such people, after all they populate our tabloid papers and internet gossip columns daily, also and perhaps in the films defence, because of the unreality of much of the substance of the story. I was reminded of a recent drama about Lord Lucan and even more so of the film 'White Mischief' about the 'occupations' of the denizens of 'Happy Valley' in Kenya during the last war. So, no disappointments, maybe a story unworthy of filming or perhaps one that will benefit from repeated viewing.
Others have written some excellent reviews with which I agree so I don't feel the need to go on at length. When I started watching the movie, I was a little bored with it's meandering, talky style, but gradually got sucked into the story. Partly due to some excellent acting, (and may I mention young Barney Clark as the 12 year old Tony, perhaps slightly overshadowed by Eddie Redmayne, but who I thought brought a lot to the role.) As the tale unfolded, I enjoyed the scenery, the gentle pace and it struck me how unique it was and so refreshing after all the special effects, noise and mayhem of much from America. There was a lot missing from the plot, much left to one's imagination but despite that, I am glad I had the chance to see a flawed but enjoyable movie.
The movie based on the true story of Barbara Brooks is one the most disturbing movies I have ever watched. There are scenes after watching which you may say," OMG,is that possible"?But yet, the movie holds your attention till the very end.The experience although not pleasant is not bad.I don't say it is one of those classic ones which it surely could have been, had it not been that raw.Yet it scores. The reason being some fine acting shows especially by Julianne Moore and brilliant camera work, as well as use of color. The bleak storyline, some disturbingly torrid scenes, unusual theme and touch of reality make the movie alive. If you have rented this,I would suggest you to spend one and half hour with it and a few more with the thoughts of it.Thoughts however might disturb you though.
