Surprisingly incoherent and boring
I'll tell you why so serious
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
Close shines in drama with strong language, adult themes.
Well, I like the teenage horror genre and I liked this one, to some degree. It is not quite bad. There are far worse horror and science fiction movies than this. This one is atmospheric, you can watch it without stumbling upon utter nonsense all the time, but yes, rent it rather than buy, because you will still need to leave your brain at the door at some major moments. Even if you are not a specialist. How can a pilot not focus on flying a plane, for instance? Can you imagine any sane person driving even a car like that? And how can you repair something outside of a flying plane? Are you serious? This is a plane, not a spaceship. Unlike with the latter, there is "some" headwind. And - they are supposedly near 4,000 meters of altitude at this moment and experience rain. Liquid rain. I know the 4 km are nowhere near the 10 km of your typical passenger jet, but this is still an eternal winter altitude over much of the Earth (especially if it's early spring 4 km below, as in the movie). But I like the "plane horror" atmosphere and the ultimate reason of the horrors which gives the movie a slight Langoliers touch. 4 out of 10.
I first watched this film shortly after it came out. I remembered it as being 'memorable', without really remembering too much about the characters or the plot.Watching it again now, I have to say I really enjoyed it.OK, you have to suspend some disbelief on the plane-flying front - there have obviously been quite a few reviews by critics with pilot's licenses (no doubt attracted by the title) and certainly there are a lot of highly unlikely flying technicalities to be overlooked. However - this film is really a sort of Lovecraftian sci-fi chiller, and let's face it - how many such films would work if they had to be technically accurate? In reality in this case, the girl would never even have got to hire the plane, let alone get into trouble in it.The cast are a uniformly pretty unpleasant and dim bunch, and it's nice to see them getting knocked off one by one, but I wouldn't say they were bad actors. I could well imagine that if you took a group of college kids and put them in a 'stress' situation like this for real, you would see exactly the sort of mental and social breakdown portrayed here. For the most part the script actually treads a well-chosen line between teenage banality and the needs of the plot. There are a few corny bits in the dialogue between the 'teenagers', and there is a strong temptation to keep saying to the screen 'so maybe you should fly the plane now?' but this is really the practical result of filming a minimal number of actors in the confines of a 6-seater cabin - if the pilot had to sit in front of the controls facing forward the whole time, she would only have a bit part in the movie! The plot has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing, and the sky monster is neatly explained. I cannot imagine why some reviewers have slated its 'realism' when (as explained by the plot) it isn't quite 'real' anyway and so doesn't have to conform to a scientifically-viable form. OK, the CGI isn't brilliant, but at DVD quality you can't see too much detail, and it's really all about the 'lost in the dark' atmosphere rather than the monster effects. The filming is - within the limits of the budget and the CGI - good and imaginative. No, it isn't Avatar, but the director does a good job with what he's got. I don't understand reviewers who continually criticise the filming standards of low-budget monster movies. You have to show the monster eventually, and no money = rubber monster. If they can't understand that, they shouldn't bother watching and reviewing such films. The ending has a nice twist which neatly ties everything together, but I think the immensity of the concept behind the ending - and the great suspension of incredulity necessary to appreciate it - left a lot of reviewers with a bad taste in their mouths. I think most reviewers just wanted the entire cast to die horribly, and gave the movie a low score when it finally appeared they might not have....If you enjoy Lovecraftian films, and can suspend some disbelief for 90 minutes, 'Altutude' is an enjoyable Friday night's viewing.
A group of teenagers go on a small airplane trip; however, midflight they are caught in a strange, supernatural storm as they have to fight for their lives against both a supernatural force and the airplane malfunctions.I came by this film as a recommendation from a friend; indeed, the concept starts off nicely enough and the twists are incredibly well done, complete with a good and somewhat open ending. There is quite a good mood created throughout the film, and the setting of a small airplane is almost claustrophobic (excusing the many technical inconsistencies in regards to airplane flying). This ends up as less of a stereotypical horror and more of a twisty, reality-questioning full length 'Twilight Zone' episode. On the other hand, the film itself is a waste of its excellent concept. The script is very poor, with some of the worst pieces of dialogue I've seen; the characters are overly idiotic and stereotyped, nothing but completely unlikable, angsty and bickering teens, in truth most of the deaths end up as a 'good riddance' moment (I ca't help liking the entity for that). The acting is also very weak, though it is hard to say if the fault is of the actors or just the script; at the very least the actresses make for a refreshing sight among all that dark atmosphere.Overall, this is an excellent concept made failure by its terrible script. It is twisted and really thought-provoking at times, complete with the reality bending trope I love, yet even that couldn't excuse the abysmal horror teens that somehow wormed their place in this picture. A shame, it could have been a great film if only they employed some thought on the characters too.
Who funds these Canadian pieces of excrement? This film is lousy in every which way possible. Start with a terrible script, pish poor acting all the way around, crappy digital effects and a director who wouldn't be out of place in a community theater project. Skip this. I truly believe the only reason movies like this trash exist is to populate the lesser pay per view cable stations like Encore, TMC or Starz. They load up their schedules with this tripe and copy cats ad nauseum hoping to fill the huge gaps between the 15 major movies they offer per month. This looks like something that the SyFY channel would pass on and they broadcast almost everything. I indicated spoilers because I just gave away the whole movie-it's all caca. Really a pish poor movie on every level.
