When a movie has you begging for it to end not even half way through it's pure crap. We've all seen this movie and this characters millions of times, nothing new in it. Don't waste your time.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.
One of the biggest classics of martial arts cinema, the film that started a new subgenre in kung fu cinema , the comedy kung fu cinema and the breakthrough fim for its star, the legendary Jackie Chan...Directed by the legendary Yuen Woo Ping and co-starred by his father Yuen Siu Tien, playing his eternal role as the old beggar drunken master, this film is an example of how a perfect kung fu movie should be made, from the badass opening sequence with Jackie training with a red background behind him , accompanied by a catchy music until the final epic final fight against the great Hwang Jang Lee , the film is a succession of outstanding and very original martial arts sequences accompanied by great doses of humour ..Although that Lau Kar Leung already had used this formula in his directorial debut "The spiritual Boxer" made three years before, however, it was this film the one that gave a new direction to Hong Kong kung fu movies becoming in an instant classic..MASTERPIECE
1978 must have been a good year for Jackie Chan because he made scores of good movies that year that in a way established him as the star. This, Drunken Master, and Eight Steps of Snake and Crane are exceptionally good movies for the time.Jackie teams up again with Siu Tien Yuen as student and teacher. He's taught the snake style from the teacher. Then by chance he learns a new style by watching a cat defeat a snake. This eventually becomes key plot in the latter part of the story. The movie has all the ingredients of a good kung fu movie. Many good fight scenes mixed in with comedy. The overall quality of the movie is very high. Many people regard this as one of best kung fu movie from the '70s. I have to agree. This movie really has the goods.
I'm no fan of animal cruelty (anyone who can casually take the life of an animal, I'm convinced, would have no compunction whatsoever killing a fellow human being), SNAKE IN THE EAGLE'S SHADOW boasts what must be a first: a toe-to-toe slugfest between a cat and a cobra. The cobra must've been devenomed: at one point, he's wrapped around the cat, who goes leaping wildly through the air trying to dislodge him; it seems hard to believe that that cobra couldn't have bitten the cat at that point- but the cat wins! (If, like myself, you're fond of cats- and the only people who aren't are the people who haven't raised one of their own- I highly recommend CAT'S THE MOVIE- but avoid CATS AND DOGS, the Disney movie from a couple of years back, at all costs: it's nothing less than Evil.) The aforementioned feline proves inspirational to Jackie Chan and he begins to incorporate some of its moves into his own kung fu fighting style. Well crafted in the extreme, SNAKE IN THE EAGLE'S SHADOW is one of the better early Chan entries.
This is the film that made Jackie Chan a superstar! it's one of Jackie's absolute best, with breathtaking fight scenes and a really wicked story!. All the characters are wonderful, and it's extremely well made as well, plus Jackie Chan is simply amazing in this!. One of my favorite moments in this film is when Jackie's pet cat has a duel with a poisonous snake(The Cat Won!), it was really well done, and I thought Jackie and Siu Tien Yuen(Grandmaster Pai Cheng-Tien) had wonderful chemistry together, plus the Training sequences were especially awesome!. The fight choreography is incredible, and there is some great slapstick humor as always in Jackie Chan's films!, plus Jang Lee Hwang is really menacing as the main opponent/villain. There are actually a couple of really cool plot twists, especially one near the end that I didn't see coming at all!, plus all the characters are very likable!, and it was nice to see this was subtitled instead of dubbed!.This is the film that made Jackie Chan a superstar!, it's one of Jackie's absolute best, with breathtaking fight scenes and a really wicked story and I say Go see it right this instant!. The Direction is superb!. Woo-ping Yuen does a superb job here with fantastic camera work, and just keeping the film at an extremely fast pace!. The Acting is fantastic!. Jackie Chan is amazing as always, and is amazing here, he is extremely likable, funny, had excellent chemistry with Siu Tien Yuen(old man), kicked that ass, had a really cool character, and added his his usual awesome charisma!(Jackie Rules!!!!!). Siu Tien Yuen is great as the old man/Jackie's master, he was really funny, and brought a lot of class, he also made me grin throughout!. Jang Lee Hwang is one hell of a martial artists, and played a fantastic villain/main opponent here, I wouldn't want to mess around with this guy, he was extremely menacing. Rest of the cast do fine. Overall Go see it right this instant!. ***** out of 5
