The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.

I have read some negative reviews around this movie, mainly based on a comparison with Thelma and Louise. I consider Ridley Scott's masterpiece one of the best movies ever, certainly the best dealing with women's friendship in the most authentic and sincere way. Bonneville is undoubtedly something different, we have three middle-aged women, we have a road trip, we have almost the same breathtaking scenery, but the whole context and the motivations are totally different, so that I find it totally useless to try make a comparison. The cast remains a talented one, and the only presence of Cathy Bates could not make a movie a bad one, and indeed it is a movie that with no pretension simply tries to reflect upon life, death, relationships, introducing some good entertaining and amusing moments. I have also read about an accusation of being too sentimental, on the contrary I appreciated its sentimental side. We are probably nowadays so used to insensitiveness around us, that whenever a movie with some feelings inside is released it risks an accusation of being a melodrama. This is not the case with Bonneville, it's a decent, pleasant road-comedy , with a good story inside, starring a good and cohesive cast.

Diane and i saw this little beauty at Paradiso two days ago and we were both enchanted by such a simple story told with feeling, understanding and truth: things rarely sen in contemporary Hollywood visual junk. True to form, the negative commentators enumerated all the "usual suspects": plot was "trite", acting was "wooden", nothing happened (read, no exploding cars, no bloody deaths, etc.--all the nonsense we have come to expect from contemporary Hollywood.) Bonneville was a soft film; a film that explored the inner sanctums of human existence with a quiet, deft touch, not the hammer that we normally expect to see from the masters of outrage. Life and its many introspective pathways can, really, be explored without full-body dissection and it can be extremely lovely to watch. We were captivated by the acting of the principals who gave the viewer a chance to deal with three distinct characters, something, again, not often seen because the scripts do not draw the characters clearly enough or the actors are not directed to explore the more subtle aspects of their actor's roles. Bonneville was the exception that proved the rule: the dialog, the exploration of particularly Lange's character, and the gentle exploration of personal mourning was a treat to watch. We congratulate all who contributed to this amazing, gentle story.

Bonneville is a buddy film about three Mormon women on a quest to return the ashes of Lange's husband to his greedy daughter. Lange, Bates, Allen, Baranski, and Skerrit are wasted in this awful film. The acting veers between mind-numbing and melodramatic. The film is predictable and boring. I am appalled at the overwhelmingly positive reviews on this site...anyone who has a healthy respect for talent could not find this film at all "wonderful". The acting was wooden, the plot predictable, and I can imagine the actors sitting around after shooting asking one another "how did we get into this mess?". What a waste.

It seems like quite some time since a refreshing film like Bonneville has hit the big screen. The film was one in which longtime friendships and healthy romantic relationships were valued. Bonneville also reminds the audience about the importance of keeping one's word (in this case a promise of a wife to her now deceased husband) to another human being. In addition to the morality evoked, Kathy Bates, Joan Allen and Tom Skerritt create wonderful, sympathetic characters. As usual, Kathy Bates does not disappoint the audience with her perfect comedic timing. The scenery is also reflective of the beautiful country in which we live - a real treat, especially for those who haven't had the opportunity to travel out West.Go see it and enjoy!
