Nice effects though.
A lot more amusing than I thought it would be.
This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
I saw this movie on a rented DVD in 2008. Read some good reviews. Was looking forward to it. One word, it is not for everyone. This movie is scary, shocking n full of tension without any cheap jump scares, ghosts, revenge or gore. The situation/plot of the movie is scary enuff. This is a disturbing film with some intense moments. It is psychologically disturbing as the horror is real. Nothing can be more scary than a sick mother hunting down her own small children on an isolated farmhouse in the father's absence. Fans of High tension, The shining, Inside shud definitely check this out. The psychotic mom is believably portrayed by Colleen Porch. The eldest son was portrayed well by Ridge Canipe. The ending of the film is more shocking then the events that preceded them. Regardless of its weaknesses (obvious set pieces/predictability) this film presents some tense moments and some real moments of sadness. The secluded farmhouse in the middle of nowhere gave more creeps n knowing that it's based on a true event is frightening. This movie is a fictionalize depiction of the Andrea Yates story. The makers of this film shud be given more projects to direct.
Like everyone else in America and Europe, I know about the tragic Andrea Yates case and how horrible post traumatic psychosis can be from reading about this loving mother who suddenly turned on the people she loved more than anything else in the world: her children. Mrs. Williams aka Mom in "Baby Blues" is the mother of 3 sons, James, Jr. "Jimmy" who is 10, 7-year-old Sammy, and infant Nathan. Cathy, the lone girl is 4 or 5 years old. The Williams family of James, Sr. "Dad", Mom and the 4 children have a normal, everyday life on the farm. Dad is a long haul trucker who leaves his namesake Jimmy in charge of the family when he goes out on business. The children seem to have happy lives, but one day all that changes. Mom starts to hear voices from the family's scarecrow and then everything literally goes to hell on this family as Mom sees her children as bad seeds who must be destroyed. Jimmy is just a little 10-year-old boy who loves his mother, but when she turns on him and kills his siblings, he has to protect himself from her rampage. In the end, Jimmy survives and so does his mother. Dad tells him that the mother was sick and she had post par tum depression that turned her against her children. This is a very good movie about something very few people want to talk about but exists: Post par tum psychosis. The actors are very good, especially Ridge Calipe as the confused, protective Jimmy and Angelina Jolie-lookalike Colleen Porch as the loving mother turned psycho. None of the actors hit a false note in this scary movie!
The smart ten year-old Jimmy (Ridge Canipe) lives in an isolated farm with his mother (Coleen Porch) and his three younger siblings. His father (Joel Bryant) is a truck driver that spends most of the time on the road leaving the family under the care of his wife. When he travels during the night to deliver some cargo in a nearby town, his stressed wife finds a match box of a stripper-club in one of his pockets and this finding triggers a psychotic breakdown on her. She kills the baby boy and tries to drown her daughter Cathy (Cali Majors) but Jimmy saves his sister. Then she stabs her son Sammy (Holden Thomas Maynard) and chases Jimmy and Cathy through the cornfields in a dreadful night of terror. "Baby Blues" is a tense and scary movie that tells the story of a mother that has a psychotic breakdown and kills her defenseless children during the night. The story is very simple and only the conclusion is disappointing, with dad accepting mom back home only to give a hook for a sequel. The cast is sensational, highlighting Coleen Porch and the boy Ridge Canipe in a very difficult role for a child. My vote is seven.Title (Brazil): "Herança Maldita" ("Damned Heritage")
Postpartum psychosis is a mental illness, which involves the rapid onset of psychotic symptoms in a woman following childbirth.Symptoms of postpartum psychosis can include feelings of being ordered by God to harm oneself or the children, seeing or hearing things that others don't,out of control feelings and thoughts, random or uncontrollable anxiety attacks or memory lapses.Andrea Yates methodically drowned her 5 children in a bathtub in her Texas house in June 2001.She suffered from post-partum psychosis. In "Baby Blues" the mother is trying to kill her four children. After having a complete psychotic breakdown she smothers the baby and stabs to death two older children.Only her oldest son named Jimmy manages to survive.Colleen Porch is perfectly believable as a murderous mommy with hatchet as are the child actors. The scenes of violence and child murder are mostly off-screen,but still pack one hell of a punch.8 out of 10.
