This is How Movies Should Be Made
As Good As It Gets
Not sure how, but this is easily one of the best movies all summer. Multiple levels of funny, never takes itself seriously, super colorful, and creative.
Story: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.
I loved JU-ON: THE GRUDGE so I was looking forward to watching this sequel, which I heard was just as good as the original. What a surprise I had! Instead of being as 'good' as the first, this film actually surpasses it, turning out to be the scariest, most effective Japanese horror film I've yet to see! This sequel takes off where the last film ended as a new bunch of characters find themselves haunted by the ever-frightening ghosts of the first film in this series. Of course, it's business as usual for a Japanese horror film, with young, attractive actresses scared out of their wits by bizarre encounters and strange happenings; there's little music and no action, just strong dialogue interspersed with some absolutely terrifying set piece showdowns between humans and spirits. The cast is uniformly excellent – I can't recall any missteps and each and every character did a convincing portrayal of somebody suffering from a ghostly manifestation. What I liked best was the pacing: although it's slow by Hollywood standards, there are regular 'scare' scenes, each of them more imaginative than in the first movie. Highlights include a reprise of the first film's classic 'staircase' climax; some spookiness going on in a car at the film's opening; an absolutely fantastic bit with living hair taking over a ceiling, and ghosts coming out of the floor as well as other, more incredible places (but I won't spoil anything). The absolute best bit for me is the bit with the wig in the closet, which I found scarier than anything else I can remember watching in the last five years – and I've watched a lot of horror films in that time, believe me! Special effects are top notch and there's some CGI usage in a couple of places which doesn't detract, just adding to the weirdness instead, and there's plenty of plot twists that'll make you scratch your head and wonder – predictable Hollywood fare this isn't! If you're looking for a genuine horror film to send a shiver down your spine then JU-ON: THE GRUDGE 2 is it; but I wouldn't recommend it for people who are easily scared. They're not likely to last the film's duration...
First, let me say that I believe this movie is hugely underrated and extremely terrifying. In fact, of all the horror films I've seen, this one is probably my favorite. Kayako has a menace to her that competes with the best of horror villains and her menace is displayed at its maximum here. Ju-on 2 has plenty of wonderfully done and creative scares for you. The storyline switches between characters in a non linear fashion. However, all the stories are intertwined and come together for a twisted, dark finale. This means that the entire movie I was both terrified and entertained. As a horror film fan, I recommend this. As a fan of Asian horror and scary ghost girls, I recommend it as well.
Ju-on: The Grudge 2 (2003) ** (out of 4) I thought this was the second film in the series but it's actually the forth one. I enjoyed the first film in the series but this one here was pretty disappointing. A TV crew is making a documentary on the house from the first film when their lead actress becomes cursed by the house. The same director as the first film (and its American remake) directed this one but most of his tricks are old and tiresome here. There's one good, creepy scene but that's about it as far as scares go. The director does a very nice job with the pacing of the film, which is good since not much happens.
I love horror films and always have, but Ju-On - The Grudge 2, was weird. The story line was brilliant, and an awesome watch, but parts of it were really confusing. With the kid at the end who pushed her mum down the stairs, was that Kayoko reborn or just some random kid, and why the hell push her down the stairs. At the start too, why did the kid choose that particular time, place and person to affect? There doesn't seem to be an relevance. Part of my confusion may be caused by the fact I haven't actually seen the first grudge film, but I would appreciate some input. Thanks a lot
